Extra-curricular activities are programs that do not fit into the normal range of school curriculums. They are programs that are primarily voluntary that students are able partake in. There are many types of extracurricular activities and they established at all three types of schools. These include programs such as drama, clubs, governance, student newspaper, music, art, and sports. In an article by Lunnenburg, he states that “Extracurricular activities serve the same goals and functions as the required and elective courses in the curriculum. However, they provide experiences that are not included in formal courses of study. They allow students to apply the knowledge that they have learned in other classes and acquire concepts of democratic life.”(Lunnenburg, 2010, 2)
The history of extra-curricular activities in the United States dates back to the early 1800’s. At first they were just a supplementary component to the standard academic curriculum for the year and usually had some practical or vocational interest that was included into the activities. The first renowned extracurricular activities in schools began at Harvard and Yale University. They were literacy groups that consisted of numerous debate clubs and Greek organizations such as fraternities and sororities. Students in American schools were the first to initiate athletic clubs.
