Why is it a current health care issue: Obesity effects all age groups and social economic groups around Australia. In individuals the lack of exercise and poor diet are the main factors that are associated with this growing epidemic. In 2000, the World Health Organisation (WHO) released a statement informing the health world that in obesity and people becoming more overweight in our communities, ‘excess body fat has accumulated to an extent that is likely to be detrimental to health’ (WHO, 2000). Prompt action surrounding obesity is essential because while currently Australia’s mortality rates are under the chronic conditions of coronary heart disease, stroke and lung cancer, these conditions have improved compared to obesity where Australia is ranked fifth highest fattest country in the world (Mitchell, 2008). When it comes to risk factors surrounding obesity, the Australian government for medical research say there are three factors that influence the individual, these are behavioral, environmental and social factors, but mostly it comes down to early life experiences and biological factors (GOV,2015).

Policy reforms should at least aim to reduce the rate of increase in obesity within communities. Trying to reduce to health issue all together is an unachievable goal that is unrealistic. For example, it would be best to set a 3 year period of implementing change and promoting healthy eating within a community, monitoring the effects and change than trying to eradicate it all together within the time frame. Because of the statistics mentioned above with the one in five Australians are obese statistic, the prevention of weight gain in adults is a more appropriative target than getting rid of it all together within the time
