Client Spotlight: Krista Leavitt, Curl Specialist

Earlier this week we had the good fortune of speaking with curly-hair-care aficionado Krista Leavitt. Aside from providing top-notch haircuts for women with curly, wavy, and coily hair, Krista is passionate about educating women on how to care for their tresses. Check out her website (curlspecialist.com) to learn more about her services. Make sure to read her blog as well for expert tips on how to care for curly hair!

Q: Why curly hair? What drove you to help women take care of their curls?

A: I read “Curly Girl: The Handbook” by Lorraine Massey in 2006 while working at a salon and was intrigued. A few years later, I revisited the book while trying to help a curly-haired neighbour, and

We are immersed in our passion all day, everyday; we live, eat, and breathe our specialty. Doesn’t it make sense that if you have a concern about something specific, you would want to visit someone that is passionate and specifically educated in your area of concern? People with curly hair are looking for someone who will help teach them how to work with their own hair type. Maybe they want to wear it curly, but don’t know how. They don’t need someone to straighten the “frizz” out, or make them feel like their hair needs “fixing” or smoothing. As a curl specialist, I create custom cuts on dry hair (yes, dry – I can see your curls better that way!). I cut each curl one at a time, which takes years of experience and skills that have been acquired through immersed training in natural texture. When finished, I create a haircut that will last 6 months or more, which saves time and money! Personally, in addition to specializing in cutting wavy, coily, and curly hair, I am passionate about teaching women how to use the products I recommend. I also educate clients on the ingredients within those products, and what they will do to benefit the hair. The first service with me includes a hands-on lesson so that curly girls will know how to style their hair when they get home. Curly girls do not get this service at a shop down the street. This is how a curl specialist differs, and why you may want to give one a …show more content…
Our realtor worked very hard to find us a home that fit all of our needs, and that is exactly what we got. We had to find a home in 5 days, which is never easy. We are pleased with our choice and really enjoy our new neighbourhood, thanks to TeamCHAMP!

Q: How has TeamCHAMP helped in your transition from Barrie to Kingston?

A: Our realtor was Jenn Molleson, and she was available for everything we needed, especially since we purchased a brand-new build and had to complete more construction before moving in. She helped bridge the gap in distance and really helped us understand the buyer’s side when buying a new construction (something we had never done before). Jenn was knowledgeable, friendly, available, and experienced in buying homes of all ages. We always felt informed and knew what was happening. You should see the email trail between us! We would recommend her and TeamCHAMP again in the future to anyone looking for a realtor.

Dating back to slavery, kinky-haired naturals were viewed as second-class citizens. Women would use a metal hot comb to straighten their kinky hair with excessive heat or lye to chemically straighten it. Women wore their hair straight because it emulated the hair of white women and was considered the only acceptable way to wear their hair. It wasn’t until the 1960s women began embracing their natural curl again, at that time most natural women wore afros. Alas, the natural hair movement died down again and women chemically straightened their hair up until the mid-2000s.…
