Steinbeck writes Curley's wife appearance to give a description of someone who wears a tight red cotton dress, hair curled up, and a full face of makeup. As the men describe her they often say how she gives “the eye” to all the men on the ranch and is not faithful to her husband. On page 31 we meet Curly’s wife for the first time, and she gets introduced by… “ ...She had full, rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up. Her fingernails were red. Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages. She wore a cotton house dress and red mules, on the insteps of which were little bouquets or red ostrich feathers.” She seems to dress very formally to be living in a barn, a reason behind this could be that she wants to be the attention of the other man at the ranch. On page 32 it is a continuation of George meeting and reacting to Curley's wife for the first time. “Jesus, what a tramp… So that’s what Curley picks for a wife…Bet she’d clear out for twenty bucks” This is proving that Curley's wife tries to find ways to be noticed and to find a sense of validation in whatever situation she can because George is definitely talking about her and showing her attention but not in a positive way. Though this book was set in 1930’s and some of the issues may be outdated, there are still many women who behave and dress in certain ways to be noticed and to have a sense of meaning. In all, this novella proves through and through that acting impulsively is harmful, as Curley’s wife is used to determine the harsh realities lots of women faced in the Great Depression. Therefore, connecting back to arguments, we should be wise to avoid violent fights with those we love, as we might end up doing something we will regret
