Curley's Dream

Of Mice and Men is like a roller coaster: it takes one on some emotional stages going around and around. Then finally coming to a complete stop. Of Mice and Men includes two immigrant workers who struggle for survival. The face some hardships that may or may keep them from their dreams coming true. John Steinbeck, the author of the book, utilizes the characters, Crooks and Curley's wife to illustrate dreams don't turn out how one wants them to be. One character who shows dreams don’t always come true is Curley's wife. Curley's wife wants to be a show girl and she could have been. “I could have went with shows. Not jus’ one neither an’ a guy tol’ me he could put me in pitchers” (Steinbeck 76). This quote shows how she had an opportunity to be in shows, also that she had an opportunity to be in pitchers. Unfortunately, Curley's wife's dream did not follow through. Curley's wife is killed by Lennie causing her dream to fail. Also she blames marrying Curley …show more content…
Crooks wants to be equal, wants to have friends, and also he wants a companionship from others. Crooks is degraded and no one talks to him because he is black. “Cause I'm black. They play cards in there but I can't because I'm black” (Steinbeck 67). The quote shows how the men don't allow him to play because of his race. Another example of Crooks dreams and how they aren't recognized is when he tells Lennie he wants to be with someone instead of being alone. “A guy needs someone” (Steinbeck 71). This quote explains how he wants to be with someone and have companion from others instead of being alone. Steinbeck fills his book with many different characters. The two characters that represents dreams don't come true are Curley’s wife, and crooks. The two characters really give a broad overview in why dreams don't always come true. So in conclusion, Crooks and Curley’s wife is used to illustrate how dreams don't always come
