One’s growth determines one’s ability to do something. Although a person may not be able to achieve their goals immediately, they have potential to do so in the future. This is shown through Christopher Boone, the main character in Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. He says “I can do anything” (221). Anything refers to achieving his dreams and goals, and he can do anything because he exhibits the potential and ability to do so. Nevertheless, people who do challenge this quote have a valid point. Christopher’s interactions show that he is unprepared for facing society and achieving his dreams. He talks about becoming a scientist and living in his own flat in the future (221), not in the present so accordingly the statement should be taken within the context of the possibility that in the future Christopher will be able to do anything and he will. He shows potential in becoming more socially adept. He gets a ticket from the man behind the ticket window (152-154) and he asks a lady behind a window to find which bus to take to his mother’s home (171-172). It shows he is progressing in his social skills and has the potential to get to a level where he can interact with others. Getting an A grade on his maths A level “made [Christopher] feel like this :)” (220). He is able to understand emotions in comparison to the past, when he did not understand facial expressions like when he was unable to guess certain emotions in the faces Siobhan showed him (2-3). In addition, although Christopher needs the help of others to guide him to his mother’s place, he still arrives. His journey to his mother’s flat shows improvement in his social skills because he starts interacting with strangers on his own accord which shows he is getting over his fear of strangers little by little thus he is improving his social skills. Christopher’s continuous growth in social skills will keep on developing to a point where he is able to interact with other humans properly which aids in accomplishing his
