In the book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, many characters are put into situations where they are forced into very stressful situations. The stress in their lives causes them to act differently and treat the people in their lives differently. Two examples of characters who are forced to deal with many stressful situations are Christopher's mother and father, but each of them handles stress very differently. Christopher's mother, when confronted by stress, left the her family, Christopher and Christopher's father, and went to live in London with Mr. Shears, the ex husband of one of their neighbors. Shears and then leaving Christopher and his father alone as she went to live with Mr. Shears in London. Christopher's father like to Christopher and told him that his mother had died and that he would never see her again. Being all alone with his father left a huge impact on his life. Christopher's father had lied to him and told him that "she had died of a heart attack and it wasn't expected" (27), but in reality, she was living with Mr. Shears in London (104). When she was living with Christopher and is father, she was extremely overwhelmed with the responsibility of taking care of Christopher, because of his special needs, so she would always get very mad and get into big arguments with both Christopher and his father. After so long, she couldn't deal with the stress anymore so she left for London, this greatly affected Christopher's life by leaving him alone with his father. Christopher's mother leaving also affected his father, Ed, in many ways. It forced him to double up on all of the work that he had to do to take care of Christopher and all the troubles of losing his wife. This made his life more stressful as well which caused him to yell at Christopher a lot and also to kill Mrs. Shears' dog (120). This is how the way in which Christopher's mother chose to deal with stress affected the people around
