Negative words carry negative vibrations. Positive words carry positive vibrations. What do you want your child to reflect to you? The label of disordered or the label of gifted in a new way?” (Suzy Miller, Awesomism). This quote by Suzy Miller symbolises that autism is not bad, it only becomes a bad thing if you make it. In Curious Incident of The Dog at Night-Time, Mark Haddon exquisitely highlights how autism affects Christopher Boone. Three aspects of an autistic person are that they are intolerant to particular foods, difficulties in social interactions, and extremes in intellect. Conversations are conducted using facial expressions to show emotions and words, at times, metaphors. A person can say:” its raining cats and dogs” with a smile or a frown. The presence of a frown showing expression, automatically states that the individual is not pleased with the weather. Christopher’s difficulty with talking and understanding people is caused by his autism whereby he cannot identify emotions, metaphors and jokes associated with the conversation. “[Christopher] cannot tell jokes because [he] do not understand them” (8). “[Christopher finds] people confusing… two... reasons… they talk without using words (emotions and expressions) ...and they talk using metaphors” (14-15). It is hard for Christopher to initiate or engage in dialog with others when these two components of conversing are missing for Christopher. He finds walking away is the easiest way to deal with the overwhelm of chatter. Even though, Haddon, does show there are social challenges with autistic people, he only gives minimal details as to why it is difficult for Christopher to connect socially with people. In today’s world, there is a vast number of reasons why it is tough for autistic people to connect with others: “People on the autism spectrum vary enormously from each other, but they all have impaired social communication skills of one kind or another” (Article 1). Social communication skills are defined as verbal and non-verbal. Speaking and listening are examples of verbal skills, where as, making eye contact is an illustration of non-verbal skill. U.K. Autism Research has printed a list of case findings of how autistic individuals are socially non-responsive. Some behaviors that may be displayed are;: "Are unwilling to make direct eye contact with other people. Use limited or exaggerated facial expressions. Cannot speak, can only use a few words or learn
