Curiosity Probes

Curiosity is one of Earth’s most valuable probes when it comes to researching Mars. It is also arguably one of the most interesting and useful probes. The history, mission and design all make up curiosity.

The history of curiosity starts ruggedly when the $2.5 billion rover almost met its untimely end with an audacious landing. Due to its cumbersome weight NASA scientists had to create a different landing plan that that of the probes prior to it. Instead of using a simple parachute system it had to get rid of a heat shield and eventually abandon its parachute to complete the landing with rockets. Roughly 60 feet above the surface of Mars a crane emitted from the spacecraft to lower the rover to a gentle landing before colliding with Mars elsewhere. Curiosity had experienced no major problems since its launch from cape canaveral on November 26, 2011. This all changed in February 2013 when a glitch in the computer systems caused the probe to go into a safety mode for a short period of time. A long term concern is the condition of Curiosity’s wheels. This problem hasn’t been solved but rather delayed. When it reached the destination of Aeolis Mons, it was put to a slow ascend up the mountain to focus more on finding life and evaluating how mars fell into such an acidic state ( NAsa, )

That question is, is there life on Mars? Curiosity has been armed with the necessary tools to solve this continously pondered mystery. Along with the main mission of finding evidence of life , it also analyzes gases in Mars’s atmosphere ( Dunbar, date ). To find organic evidence and evidence of environments for life, it analyzes rock and soil. Curiosity is the first ever rover to be able to do this (Nasas,

Mars is a gigantic desert, so it has many sandstorms. That means the rocks are smooth, but one must still go over them. “The undercarriage of the rover is taller than any of the rocks around here, and the hills are gently sloping affairs, smoothed by eons of sandstorms” (Weir, 96). Driving on a deserted desert planet is cool, and dangerous, therefore it is probably inhabited with aliens. One of the first Mars rovers was Pathfinder, so it would just be boring without it.…

Mars could have once harbored life. Some conjecture that life might still exist there today. In the past, oceans may have also covered the surface of Mars, providing an environment for life to exist. Although the red planet is a cold desert today, researchers suggest that liquid water may be present underground, providing a potential refuge for any life that might still exist there. Several studies have shown that there is abundant water ice beneath the…

Of these probes, NASA's Mars Odyssey has operated the longest since its arrival in 2001. Among its accomplishments, is the discovery of ice in the south polar cap, evidence that melting snow caused some of the gullies, and it has helped provide adequate landing sites for the rovers Spirit and Opportunity. NASA isn't the only one in on researching Mars though, the second oldest orbiter belongs to the European Space Agency, called Mars Express. It arrived in 2003 and has since, along with examining the atmospheric chemistry of the planet, has provided great topographic maps of the volcanoes, canyons, and craters on the…

The moon has radiation too when Americans went there, but a good argument is made with radiation with more time on Mars. Many astronauts are willing to assume the risks of Mars Mission, so they know the costs of this greater good. By learning about Mars and going there, new technologies will be made to make life better on Earth too.…
