Let’s face the truth. Curfews do not need to be enforced. The city council wants to enforce a curfew that would make it illegal for teens to be out past 10 p.m. on weekdays or after midnight on weekends. We should consider the reality of this world and accept that teenagers, no matter what time it is, if they wish to, can participate in illegal or unsafe activity. On top of this enforcement being ineffective, it is unconstitutional; it fails to provide teenagers with the same rights as anyone else. Accept reality and vote against our city council’s wishes. If anyone, not even specifically teenagers, wants to participate in an illegal activity they are going to do it regardless of the addition of a curfew. This curfew would just be yet another unnecessary law broken on top of what that person was already trying to do if they were caught; therefore, making it meaningless to them. It purely takes away the rights teenangers have as people and does nothing differently for them besides introduce them to what being treated unconstitutionally is like. The 14th amendment strictly states that “ ...No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”. Teenagers and adults are at risk of the same issues and these issues can happen whenever they please. If an 18 year old went out past 10 p.m. on a late night walk a 17 year old would legally not be able to do the same thing simply because one was born before the other.
