I believe that curfews are very vital to a child's development. Assigning a curfew to a child's life leaves them with many valuable morals and traits, such as: structure, responsibility, and can ultimately lead up to a longer, healthier life, physically and mentally.

To begin with, an enforced curfew incorporates structure to a child's life and prevents any inappropriate, undesirable behavior. As briefly mentioned before, if a minor's time out at night is limited, they'll be out of harm's way. They won't be corrupted by any negative nighttime activities. They won't fall into gambling, substance abuse, vandalism, or many more bitter possibilities. They won't be injured by careless night time drivers. And bitter sweetly, if the child tends to be a troublesome juvenile, at least they won't be out at night to wreak any more havoc. The website Usmayors.org states,"88% of 347 cities (236) said that curfew enforcement helps to make streets safer for residents. The officials commented that there is less traffic late at night; residents feel safer; It is easier to find runaway; it is harder for criminals to hide from the police during curfew bourse because there are fewer people to blend in with; graffiti and vandalism are reduced; and parents are helped to feel responsible." In addition to keeping the public safe, your child can also get a sufficient amount of sleep for the next day. The earlier they're in bed, the earlier they'll fall into a satisfying

    v. State of Florida. I chose to go with the minority opinion, there are many reasons as to why a minor would be out past 11 p.m. From many past experiences, I can recall times when I had to errands. There are many reasons as to why a minor would be out during that time, such as family emergency, last minute errands, or even school projects with a friend. A curfew time should not be set by the law; this is more of a personal family problem that each family can solve by themselves. I believe that a curfew should be set by the guardian of the…

Nora Gold states that curfew laws take away some of the civil rights that teens and young adults have as Americans. Gold states in her essay, “The most obvious constitutional problem is that curfews grant police the power to detain citizens for nothing more than appearing young.” This quote is stating that curfew laws punish anyone who is out after a certain time just because they look young. This also gets in the way of teens who work night shifts for their job or even just being outside their house on the sidewalk (Gold, Nd). Another thing that curfew laws violate are some rights that the teens have from the first amendment, which are not allowing them to go to religious services and even meeting for school that take place at night (Gold,…

For many new drivers / teenagers, drowsy driving is the cause of many accidents. Some adolescents who get out of school at 3:00 p.m. or earlier have plenty of free time to do anything they want until the work day ends. Also sleep deprivation can increase risk taking behavior and can impair decision-making abilities (Lewis). When decision making abilities are impaired then students are more likely to not attend school or make good choices. Another benefit of schools starting earlier is the educational…

The Mill Valley High School Board members should reject the proposed idea of a later school day because it is beneficial to students with after school activities such as sports and jobs. The idea that a later school day is beneficial towards students is preposterous because students with after school activities and jobs would need to be out of school at an earlier hour. Take John Sherwood’s testimony for example. He complains, “But it’s going to make football practice a nightmare. We won’t be able to be dressed and on the field until 4:45, and in October, it starts getting dark by 5:30...…

As Daniel Domenech, executive director of AASA, the School Superintendents Association, says “Allowing high schoolers to sleep in could mean sending elementary kids to school in the dark during the winter, as they would have to take the early schedule. That could pose a safety dangers to the youngest kids as they walk to school or wait at bus stops”(2). This shows that it would create complications. According to Sickmund, Snyder, and Poe-Yamagata, (1997), and Snyder, & Sickmund, (1999), “approximately 57 percent of all violent juvenile crime occurs on school days…..and peaks in the evening between 8:00PM and 10:00PM on non-school days” (qtd. In Sutphen & Ford, p. 60). Unless, the teenager is at work or with a parent/guardian, curfew should be around 8PM on school and non-school nights. There is currently a debate going on right now about times with curfew and whether or not one should be kept in place. This debate is happening all over the United States, not just in Indiana.…
