Curfew Laws In America

Teenagers across America have curfews, it’s always been that way, but how would kids and teens react to having curfew set by law rather than their parents? Past a set time, teenagers off all ages have to be treated unfairly, like criminals. Why should innocent teens be punished for doing nothing wrong? If someone robbed a bank, would the people at the bank get arrested? No, so why should teens be any different? Just because they’re not adults, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have their born rights. Curfews imply that teens are dangerous, parents are incapable of properly raising their kids, and they promote racial profiling. Some may argue that curfews can keep kids safe; and can also cut down on crime. According to research, curfews have little to no effect on criminal activity. There is hardly any data to actually prove that set curfews can be beneficial to crime drop or communities. So, why have a curfew that doesn’t help? “They are politically popular tools, even without evidence to back up whether or not they work” says Kenneth Adams, A criminal justice professor at Florida Central University (Berg). Officials use curfews to give people a false sense of security. …show more content…
Curfews insinuate that without it, Kids will be dumb enough to get in bad situations and commit crimes. The curfew makes some teens feel like they’re being punished, even though they’ve done nothing to be punished for. This could negatively impact their feelings about themselves and authority figures. Jose Regaldo, 13, says, “It’s not fair. They think all kids are bad, but we’re not,” (Irvine). No one likes to be told not to do something, a lot of the time it will make them want to do it even more. “If you keep telling kids ‘no’ all the time and don’t give them a ‘yes’ they’re going to rebel- you have to keep a balance,” says Dr. Ellen Marmer,

I chose to go with the minority opinion, there are many reasons as to why a minor would be out past 11 p.m. From many past experiences, I can recall times when I had to errands. There are many reasons as to why a minor would be out during that time, such as family emergency, last minute errands, or even school projects with a friend. A curfew time should not be set by the law; this is more of a personal family problem that each family can solve by themselves. I believe that a curfew should be set by the guardian of the…

It can also affect many school activities with having to start later and end sooner since the day ends faster. Teens shouldn’t be affect with these possibilities of not being in an activity because the later changes. There has been a non-scientific survey that has reported 50 percent of parent that have agree or are undecided with the new time changes and 60 percent of staff agreed with the change. I believe that parents think it’s right for their children to start later or earlier because of the evidence that they have been provided about their children academic improvement. Staff had worked in school with the children and they might also believe it is right because it can change their school education but they don’t understand that it can affect the different schools because it will not be the same times for all…

Despite this split, most (63%) violent crimes committed by juveniles occur on school days. Nearly one-fifth (19%) of juvenile violent crimes occur in the 4 hours between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on school days. A smaller proportion of juvenile violent crime (15%) occurs during the standard juvenile curfew hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. (inclusive of both school and non-school days). The annual number of hours in the curfew period (i.e., 8 hours every day in the year) is 4 times greater than the number of hours in the 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. period on school days (i.e., 4 hours in half of the days in the year). Therefore, the rate of juvenile violence in the afterschool period is 5 times the rate in the juvenile curfew period (inclusive of both school and non-school days).…

Since the early 1990’s, researchers have known that teenagers have a sleep-phase delay. This means that we have a harder time going to bed early or waking up early. The circadian rhythm makes the brain more alert in the evening and tired later in the night. The action of schools starting before 8:30 is going against nature and the instinct of teenagers.…

Most schools are starting to make school hours start a little too early and it’s starting to cause problems. It has been shown that students’ behaviors are starting to change a lot since the change of school hours. Although some may prefer getting up early, Central High School should push the school hours back because it would reduce absences/tardies, it would improve students’ grades, and it would cause less behavior issues. Lots of people are not morning people, implying that they don’t like waking up early. With that being said, some students move slow when they wake up in the morning for school which causes them to be late.…
