Throughout,my volunteering positions, I was able to help make a difference within the people I helped. In addition, I learned how to be a leader in my community. Initiative was present in each volunteering position I took as they were all involved group work and listening to each others opinion with a positive mindset. Most of the time I had to do the assigned job first as many did not want to do the task assigned. A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…

The leadership positions and volunteer services gave me the strength, determination, compassion, and empathy to truly benefit someone else’s life, no matter if it’s one or a thousand. When I volunteered at the Cold Weather Shelter, I had the opportunity to connect with those who were less fortunate. I saw the goodness and potential in so many people, especially the children. Seeing their smiles when I made a joke or seeing them excited when we put the food out or seeing them in anticipation, bouncing on their toes when I brought games from my house to play with, filled me with such satisfaction and contentment.…

Throughout my entire engagement within the program it was very surprising to see many connections overlap within each activity. The first one I realized that I had practiced with all three activities was social engagement, me practicing social engagement was included in all three of my activities by me just being able to be social within the community.
