This entire workshop had lasted for approximately 90 minutes. It was fun, the time flew by so fast I could not believe it, I felt as if I was in the gym. In this workshop, it allows the participation to involve oneself deeply in the new dance and rhythm techniques. It encourages the participants to expand their physical routines while learning to tell stories through African cultured (rooted) styles. You do not have to be experience to attend or even to participate, they will work with you at an amateur or even at a professional level. This workshop is structured to compliment and to inspire healthy lifestyles, while boosting your morale (the confidence, enthusiasm, and discipline of a person or group at a particular time).
The residencies workshop was briefly introduce to us as, a way to gain a solid introduction to specific dance and percussion styles. This class they explained would typically runs from between 4 to 16 weeks, giving the attendees (students) the time to absorb new techniques. The sessions are 35-90 minutes long which can be perfect for a lunchtime or an after work

Loud beats, shouts and footsteps fill my ears, and an awful stench of sweat makes it’s way into my nose, but this dance studio is a special place nonetheless. It may seem hectic and rowdy to some people, but not to me. An environment I entered so cautiously at first started to become natural and safe. I had never thought I would spend so much time in this place doing something I loved. I would not forget how the first day went.…

One of the course objectives I used to use for Music Cultures World was “Students will be able to identify and discuss the differences and similarities among musical performances from a variety of cultural contexts.” After taking the ACUE 1A module, I decided to revise the course outcome as follows: 1) Students will be able to illustrate the connection between music and dance in African music by producing a 5-minute flash mob. 2) Students will be able to demonstrate the application of a number notation system by creating a 5-minute gamelan performance.…

Recently, I had the pleasure of seeing the performance The Future's So Bright performed beautifully by the Castilleja Dance Department and Production Workshop at Castilleja Private School. At first glance, this performance space looked like an average stage in a small auditorium, yet then the lights dimmed and it turned into a bright, musical, spectacular performance of dance. Prior to the actual dance, the school put together a well written slide show to help the audience visualize the issue of focus, which was to help create a better learning environment in east Palo Alto. After this was shown a wonderful ensemble of dancers proceeded onto the stage. The upbeat music started playing and all the dancers began to carry out many exciting and…

Being able to choreograph and perform in dance concert is a very unique and amazing experience. Creating ideas with everyone around you and transforming those ideas into a masterpiece is a process like no other. With everyone’s opinions out in thin air, you can put all of your ideas into one to create something so beautiful. In Modern especially it was really intriguing to watch the whole process of how the dance was created. Since we did originally have a combo to go off of, it was different watching all the different groups create a combo over the steps but just in a different format.…

On December 2nd, 2016 at the Constance theatre the dance department presented a show called Agbedidi. The show, directed and choreographed by Mohamed DaCosta and Trent D. Williams, Jr., displayed a combination of Traditional African and Contemporary Dance. The house buzzed with excitement as the start of the show approached. It is quite encouraged to see such a large audience at an event, but this audience also brought a positive, vibrant atmosphere for the dancers to soak up. I was curious to see what this year’s performance would look like.…

African roots of Jazz dance are located in the soil which grows out to become a tree with different variations of Jazz Dance, and like a tree the different forms of Jazz dance intertwine. Although I do not see myself having a career in Jazz dance, I do know this class will give me a higher appreciation for those who do perform this form of…

Watching this video remaindered me of seeing this group performed at a cultural event or festival in Minnesota, two years back. The sounds or music coming from animations, drums, instruments, parents and children performing this dance make me remember the goes boo I had when I watched them dance. I could not image the performance by these kids born in Minnesota, U.S dancing and following the rhythms of the traditional dance music from where their parents come from so well as if they were born in Mankon, Cameroon. An African ironically expression states “the beauty of a woman lies on the curves around the waist or hip area.”…
