Cultural Ancestry
The cultural tradition of Colombia is diverse. There are distinct groups within the Colombian culture that bear unique accents, cultural adaptations, social patterns, and different customs. The distinct group within the Colombian culture is divided into based on their location; those within the coastal regions, those in the interior region, and those in the countryside. The individual groups come together and do their regional cultures during special events like elections, beauty pageants, and also sporting events. The majority of the people stay at the Inland Andean region which starts along the coast of Caribbean. As of June 2000, the country has a population of about 42.3 million bearing mixed races with 75% of the population bearing mixed heritage out of which 55% are mestizos, 16% of mulattoes, 4% Zambos, the remaining 20% have European, Indian, or African ancestry. The official language of Colombia is Spanish. All the Colombians speak Spanish except the Amazonian basin. Colombia uses English especially those in the upper class. The Colombian culture takes a good care to preserve the purity and their language is marked by various cultural expressions. The Spanish spoken in Colombia is different from the one spoken in Spain. The majority of the business people in Colombia speak English. The form of communication is normally formal. In addition, they tend to speak in a soft manner. At times they raise their voice to make a point, however, they dislike boisterous and loud related behaviors and traits. The communication strategies used at a restaurant is different. The communications at this place are normally kept in a quiet and lower tone. Emotions are not portrayed openly. People tends to converse in proximities that are slightly low, standing at a range of two or fewer feet apart. No one should ever back away even if the distance it too close than the personal comfort position of a person allows. Backing away would mean that the other person is uncomfortable around them. Consequently, communication within the Colombian culture is not overly direct. This is because the Colombian people are not always to the point (Fandiño Parra, 2014). Silence is an expression that one is embarrassed or even is an indication of a negative message. It is similarly important to use indirect approach when communicating with the Colombians as this may perceive one to be pushy and
