Across The Pond After finishing my senior year of high school, I was preparing for the next chapter of my life. I would be attending UC Davis in the summer for a four weeklong orientation program; I would have to move from Germany to California. This was the first time I would be leaving home by myself to a different country and it was the first time in over eight years that I would be reintroduced to the American culture. I did not have any roots in any American city nor did I have a so-called “home state.” However, if there was one thing for sure, it was that Germany was my home and it has been for the majority of my life. In this paper, I will be discussing how the following topics in sociology: culture, socialization, and identity contributed to how I felt about my move back to California. According to Dr. Ruiz, culture can be defined as a complex system that defines how a way of life is taught from one generation to the next. It is also responsible for influencing our behavior (Lecture, Ruiz, 01/07/2016). Upon moving to California, I experienced a transition between the culture that I have known for the majority of my life to one that was completely foreign to me. I was born to Filipino parents and spent my childhood in Kaiserslautern, Germany, the largest overseas military community in Europe.
