Mexican Culture Reaction Paper

For the culture shock assignment, I decided that I would go to a Mexican grocery store. I went to Bonito Michoacán. Before going, I decided that in order to have the best experience I would have to look around the whole store and buy something. To make things more exciting I decided I would buy something to make for lunch and possibly a treat. On my way there, I was kind of nervous. I felt like I would not belong and I thought that people might stare at me. I went around nine in the morning. I felt like that would be a good time to go because there would not be a lot of people there yet, but it would still be a little busy. I found my prediction to be true as I drove up to the store, there was only a handful of cars. As I walked up to the doors of the store, I noticed the sticker that tells what credit cards they accepted. Surprisingly, they accepted most type’s credit cards. …show more content…
There were sponges, soaps, and other items you would find in that type of aisle at another grocery store. However there were a couple of items I noticed that are specific to their culture. The most prominent thing I saw was their wide variety of religious candles. I have seen these candles before at the Dollar Tree and Walmart, but I have never seen a collection this big before. There was at least three feet of shelving dedicated to the candles. I can tell that these candles play a major role in the superstructure section of their culture. In this section, there was a tortilla flattener, which is appropriate for the store to carry, but just something I might not see in another store. There was also a pickle container. This, I found interesting, because I had not seen one for around ten years. This made me think, again, about the peppers I had seen, and I realized, that although they might use this for pickles, they might also use it for jalapeños. I thought that was very innovative. The other half of that aisle had candies and

Even though it is primarily a bagel shop, it mainly smelled like coffee. Also, traces of bagels and even a caramel type of smell hit me; it smelled somewhat like a scented candle. Looking around, I noticed the wall of large windows which leads out to an open space that consists of construction going on and a large open area next to a building of dorm rooms. I think the windows make the store feel bigger than it actually is and bring in an environmental feel, which matches well with the color scheme. I also noticed the lighting which consists of cylinder like shades hanging from the ceiling and a row of lights pointing at the main…

To experience a local aspect of Hispanic culture I visited the Tienda Mexicana La Guadalupana, a grocery store in Chapel Hill. Once inside, the term that came to mind when looking around was bodega. The store was small, but made clear use of its space, with items on the walls, shelves, and even the ceiling. This is in contrast to most “American”, or english speaking, grocery stores I have been to, as they are often wide and spacious, with plenty or room to showcase products. They commonly have bright lights; light, colorful walls; ads and signs everywhere with directions and promotional deals; and music playing over loudspeakers.…

Upon entering, we were courteously greeted by a women who was just inside the front door. Author, speaker, and filmmaker, Jean Kilbourne, wrote in Reading Popular Culture, “Advertisers want us to believe that we are not influenced by ads” (94). Advertisers depend on consumers not noticing the subtle and subliminal effects of advertisements in strategic display setups in stores, product sales, and social media. JCPenney, a department store company, operates over one thousand locations nationwide; the company uses tactics that influence consumers because stores, stocked with merchandise, must keep their product moving to make room for new arrivals. The JCPenney operates a store in the Indian River Mall in Vero Beach, Florida; this store features two-stories of merchandise, colorful, high quality advertising, and product sales that…

The next time I walk-in into any store I would surely observe more than I ever have until now. The reason simply being that in the last couple of days I have learnt so much about organisational culture and its different aspects that I can no longer look at any organisation the way I used to look at it before. Earlier, whenever I used to visit a store, it never occurred to me that everything that I could possibly see in that store was meant to be the way it is for a reason. I was unaware of the fact that every store or every organisation for that matter has its own culture and has its own way of doing things.…

There are also no self-check outs at this location, a feature which is becoming more common and adds a bit of independence to the customer. Upon entering the only entrance of this store, the customer is greeted by carts, baskets, small carts for "future shoppers", the circular, some disinfecting wipes, and hand sanitizer. The addition of hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes at the store entrance is a great feature which has become increasingly common in stores. This is especially helpful as the flu season approaches. While this is part…

Aurorah-Rae, in this learning experience you were incorporating an everyday experience into your play. Every person in this world at some time in their life had to engage with shopkeepers in order to purchase the goods and services that they require to live and enjoy life. I am sure that you have had many experiences visiting shops in order to purchase good such as food, clothes, and other items. The reason I know this is that you were familiar with the exchange of money for goods and you knew that when someone purchase good the sales assistant taps away on a cash register to add up the cost of the items. They then accept cash or eftpos cards as payment for these goods and the items are then packed into bags or in this case a shopping basket.…

The focus was on craft beer and food and was not necessarily a place for art. Art was found inside of the Whole Foods grocery store. Once inside of the store, patrons visiting the café will see a wall featuring the art of a local artist. Hiking Boots: DEATH OF A HOEGAARDEN February 16th, 2012 | Author: AdminIf you read my earlier post about my initial experience with the grocery store, than you know it was no walk in the park. An experience I look forward to back in the US, my trip here was more like a walk through a dark alley in east LA and I left wanting to cry. However, I was fortunate enough to make the next trip with a local who helped me navigate my way through the isles and identify things like sour cream, called casin creme, or cream cheese, called finlandia.…

Can you imagine being a little child that wandered away from your mom? My worst nightmare as a kid was getting separated and lost from my parents. Going to the grocery store or going to any big retail store such as Walmart, I would always hold my mom or dad’s hand so that I wouldn’t get lost. I could quite honestly say that being lost or separated from my parents would have been one of my greatest fears while growing up. I know that in psychology there is something called separation anxiety in which a little child will begin to cry when they are no longer near their parents.…
