Losing your culture can cause uncertainty in one’s identity. However the older the migrant is, the more secure in their identity they are. Elders are more set in their ways and will have difficulties assimilating. Maturity and responsibilities will allow them to adjust to society but they will hold on to their beliefs and culture values. Older migrants hold on to their culture values and dialect longer than younger migrants. They suffer from culture shock. The indigenous children who were forced to attend Americanized boarding schools described it as being two people and having to hide who they really were. Being away from their families and learning a whole new way of life caused them to lose that closeness and belonging they had with their family. The children were perceived as a different person. This happens when individual assimilate to their new environment. When the individual returns home the individual is seen as different, such as in the way they speak and the way they behave. This also causes an internal struggle; a pressure to behave in the ways of the child’s culture and a pull to behave in a more typically American way.
It does not matter where the individual is born or what culture the individual identifies with. The fact is all persons’ are a part of the human race with the same hopes, the same struggles and dreams. The humanity in each person is what connects people to each other. It would benefit all if there was an organization that helped people adjust to the new culture but also if there were a place where an individual can appreciate that their culture and celebrate who they
