Evaluate two relevant studies
Discuss ethical considerations related to research studies at the sociocultural level of analysis
Explain how principles that define the sociocultural level of analysis may be demonstrated in research. I chose this study because it was easy for me to remember for the IB exam and I could apply it to many different learning outcomes in the sociocultural and biological level of analysis. It is one of the most memorable studies from last year in my opinion and there was a lot of information about the methodology to create a more in depth analysis. A study that is similar to the one I chose was done by Berburg and Thorlindsson in 2005. They aimed to show that sub-cultural values and norms influence behavior more specifically if pro violent values influenced social norms. They did this by taking boys and girls between the ages of 15 and 16 from 49 public schools in Iceland. A survey was given to the students which asked how often they engaged in violent behavior or acts such as fighting, kicking and threatening. They found that boys were more violent than girls and that the aggressive students believed that they conformed to group norms. This shows how the culture of violence was normal to the students and exhibiting this violent became a part of their culture and a way for them to exert dominance similarly to Nisbett and Cohen’s study in which the violent behavior in the South was associated with honor and
