For some reason it seems everyone in the United States has some fad or obsession with England… or maybe just their intriguing accents. Considering England has a very interesting culture and also a quite different one, many cannot blame. Due to many loses in wars and battles England was under the rule of the Romans, Saxons, Vikings and Venetians for quite some time. Today, because of refugees coming from places all over the world England has become culturally diverse.
Language is a significant part of a country’s culture, without language communication would be impossible. Language often defines who you are as a person and where you are. Depending on the language spoken you can figure out where you are located. England has three main languages spoken throughout their country. English is the number one spoken language. Roughly 138,000 people (around 8 percent) speak no English at all. Welsh used to be a frequently spoken language but now it is on the decline in the last 10 years. Scottish is also spoken in England but not as often as English and Welsh.
A diverse ethnicity is also very prevalent in most cultures. In England, 92 percent of the population is Caucasian. In other words, we share many of the same holidays but there are a few we do not share. On January 25th, people come together to celebrate “Burn’s Night”. This is a night where people celebrate his poetry with toasts and readings and food. Another holiday England celebrates unique to their culture is “Festival of Colours”. This celebration includes people running around throwing paint on each other celebrating the end of winter. England also shares a few holidays with the United States. We both celebrate New Years, Christmas and of course Valentines
