Reflecting back on my life, I was taught to believe that it is a man’s job to take care of his family. For most of my childhood, I lived with both my parents and two siblings. While my father would go out to work, my mother would stay at home to make sure my siblings and I were okay. When I reached the age of 15, my mother became a single mom of three. I am the foundation, the strength, and the provider. I am a spouse, a father of two, a brother, and a son. I am a hard worker always aiming for more, much more than my parents ever had to provide. I am an African American. I am a product of divorce. I am a person who escaped drugs, gangs, and incarceration. I am person who believes that hard work pays off. In conclusion, culture, goes beyond celebrating customs or way of life, shared dishes or languages; it is a genuine understanding that is exclusive to each individual. As a teacher, I hope to instill in all students to respect differences and always work hard at success. Furthermore, I can demonstrate how growing up in a culture where education was a second choice for me.
