Culture In Disney Movies

Remix in videos is how younger generations develop the understanding of older culture that they were not alive to experience by bringing another life to a film, that reflects the concepts and style that younger generations are used to. Which brings the culture of that film to a new generation so they may appreciate it also. Take Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Pete’s Dragon, Alice in Wonderland, and Jungle Book for example. All beloved Disney movies. Sleeping Beauty was originally showed January 29, 1959, and has become a classic Disney movie. Every little girl knows who Aurora is and loves her. And most can even identify her signature song. (Insert clip of Once Upon A Dream) But most kids these days don't know the story behind the Princess. Not even most of the basics. At least, until May 30, 2014. When Disney released Maleficent. …show more content…
This princess, like most of the others was blonde. She was spunky and wore a blue dress, and her head was filled with fancy. Her name was Alice. Her story grew rapidly popular for years after its first appearance. Much as if the film itself had drank from a peculiar bottle. But as the years went on its popularity shank. As if it had eaten a cake that said “eat me.” Maybe in a world of its own it would have stayed more towards the top of Disney's best movies. (Insert In a World of My Own) But much like Alice’s trip through Wonderland, that wish looked a bit different than they thought when Tim Burton took the story over. (Insert Alice’s Theme) The new Alice in Wonderland was released March 5, 2010. Tim Burton brought a darker side to the once peculiar film, which caught the eyes of many teenagers and parents who waited years after the first trailer to see the movie. Now the movie is not just for little kids to enjoy, but for teenagers to find their inner Disney lover. The movie really put a new spin on an old classic and made it appealing to an entirely new

Mary was heavily influenced by the vibrant colors and strong geometric shapes of South America. She also had a flair for simplicity and creating mood. This childlike quality of simplicity and composition of color really caught Disney’s eye. In the concept of Alice in Wonderland (and many other Disney films of the 1950’s), we can see…

After watching these short films I am reminded no matter how advanced our society get in technologies from Iphones to Tesla’s some people will always continue to be stuck in the past when it comes to values and ideas. We have basically endless amounts of information at our fingertips and maybe 10 years away from self-driving cars but some people in this country treat other as if we are in the 1920’s. How is it ok for media outlets to produce content to persuade people into their ignorant narrow-minded ways? Disney movies are the worst when it comes to sending an alternate message of ignorance; they portray woman as a helpless princess that needs a big strong man in order to live happily ever after or they send a message of racism like in the…

Children are being manipulated from the start, they are growing up in environments where beauty is seen as white, but not only in dolls but also through the media, through the “amazing” animated movies of Walt Disney. The truth is that when I was growing up I never saw a princess that look like me other than Pocahontas or Aladdin and we all know they weren’t even Hispanic. The only relationship I had with those princesses was the language since my mother would often buy me the Spanish version movies. Although, that was 13 years ago, there hasn’t been a change, well based on my results. I showed my 6-year-old neighbor a picture with a list of pictures of all the Disney princesses.…

Again, both are caught in the same mud fight with the fairies and trolls of the Moors. You notice these even when you're not really looking and you can tell there is a comparison between the two that is crystal clear. You can tell Maleficent sees a little bit of herself in Aurora because she actually tries to reverse the curse. The unmistakeable similarities they have with each other gives us the slightest bit of hope that the same pureness that is seen in Princess Aurora is in Maleficent as well and that she has the capability to change for the…

When you think of Disney movies you think of princesses and positives messages being presented to children all around the world through the actions and decisions of famous characters such as Mickey Mouse, Hercules, Little Mermaid and that’s just to name a few. The majority of children idealizes these characters throughout their childhood by looking up to them or finding a comfort in them. But do parents know what their child is really watching when they are too busy to realize that Disney is not as innocent as parents trusted to be. According to Jane Gallop “Close Reading means looking at what is actually on the page, reading the text itself, rather than some idea behind the text” (Gallop 7.) Also, instead of being shown in theaters all across the country or world, Fantasia was only shown in twelve theaters for the first release. Walt Disney was always one for pushing boundaries on just about everything he knew or met, Fantasia being one of them. “He was the first to produce a talking cartoon, the first full Technicolor cartoon, the first full length feature animated feature, and with Fantasia he would push the boundaries of sound and the overall experience of going to the theater.” (McCormick). Fantasia is not like most films, when critics tried to be critical with it…

During Thanksgiving break, I was able to take my family to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. While some of the aspects of Disney culture is sanitized, the experience of seeing art work and “tasting” food from other cultures was interesting. (As a side note, I did find some of the African food to be spicy, I would hate to see how truly spicy African dish would taste.) My favorite restaurant on the Disney property was “Boma,” this was an African inspired restaurant located at Disney’s Animal Kingdoms Lodge. I am not a big meat eater but I found the Ghanian Oxtail Stew to be delicious, which I was not going to try because of the name.…

Steps out of True Love “So to spend a life of endless bliss; Just find who you love through true love's kiss…” The lyrics from a Disney film Enchanted tells about Disney’s “true love”, which trapped Disney Princesses in their assigned gender roles for years. Over nearly eight decades, under the influence of development of feminism, the fairytale-style true love first defined by Disney films has been constantly challenged and finally subverted. Throughout three waves of feminist movements, reflecting our culture’s shifting values, female characters in these films gradually grow from empty pictures dependent on men in the early years to lively figures with individuality, independence and strong minds. These women characters once trapped in…

Disney princess films are popular, especially among little girls. There are entire lines of toys and clothes that use the images of the princesses. Children have been enjoying Disney princess films for many years. Snow White is considered to be the first Disney princess film; it was released in 1937 (imdb.com). Many of the early Disney princess films star female protagonists who have extensive relationships with wild animals, but very negative relationships with their mother or step-mother, if they have any mother at all.…
