In class discussions, one thing that really stood out to me was the discussion regarding the integration efforts within the Israeli society. Specifically, the author questions what kind of system is necessary in order to have smooth integration with the least amount of tension and culture conflict. The author then describes how he believes it is democratic pluralism. Which has been seen in Switzerland and Canada. Also how one had to maintain silence, as it talks about when the author explains his realization on the gravity of the ethnic problem in Israel in 1951.…
Religious customs and beliefs helped shape different cultures and societies throughout human history. While some people turned to notorious substances such as, various drugs and alcohol, many turned to religion when experiencing hardships within their lives. Even though people tend to group religion with morality often times, worshippers find their morality and actions questioned by outsiders. The book, The Kingdom of Matthias, by Paul E. Johnson and Sean Wilentz conjures a riveting tale of the happenings revolving around a religious cult in 1830’s America. During this time, the way of life started to shift from rural farm life to an industrialized urban setting and a religious revival occurred.…
I agree with you regarding the culture of Texas political culture. Texas is known for being a individualistic and traditionalistic state. Professor Elazar believe that Texas have a very strong hold in being an individualistic and traditionalistic state because “economic and social conservatism, and the distrust of politics parties. With the history between Texas and Mexico, I cannot see how Texas will change the political culture to moralistic. Can you please explain how Texas will become moralistic culture?…
Chapters one and two in Culture War The Myth of a Polarized America? explain that America is not polarized. This reading contrasts in-class discussions saying that the American legislature is becoming more polarized based off of evidence from Political Polarization in American Politics. Culture war is a conflict in politics about religious and moral values where the different political parties have their own opinion as to what is right versus wrong. The group most supportive of this belief are journalists.…
Littig 1 Lauren Littig Mrs. McDonough/ English 31 September 10th, 2017 Period 2 Ideological claims of American Culture : Baseline Synthesis Essay While other countries build their culture off of the religion, ethnicity, or race which is unique to them, America pridefully stands behind a different idea of originality, which holds just as much value to it’s citizens; a widely diverse society which can be seen as a ‘melting pot’ of different races, ethnicities, and religions which integrate to create the nationality they so proudly call their own; American. Three seemingly contradictory texts; “Why Superman is the Greatest American Hero,” “Why I Love a Country…
Acceptance makes the world go round. Many problems we have in the world today are caused by people not accepting one another. Some examples of these problems are racism, war, terrorism, and denying people’s personal freedoms. Without acceptance the world would be filled with even more hatred and hostility than there already is. “Texas v Johnson Majority Opinion” written by William J. Brennan, “My So-Called Enemy” directed by Lisa Gossels, and “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish” written by Etgar Keret all give lessons on acceptance and show why it is important.…
History plays one of the most prominent roles in shaping our lives today. Studying the behavior of the elderly, is key in influencing our behavior on a daily basis. The youth fail to behold of the privileges that are given to them today, through the hard work of our ancestors. An accurate example of this is seen in both the gender roles and sexuality in the United States. There are now women running for presidency, and all gender welcoming bathrooms in California.…
The question “What is diversity?” is a very difficult to answer. One could argue that there are multiple correct answers, and no wrong ones. A simpleminded person may argue it’s a simple distinction between white and black. When a sociologist defines diversity, they would have many many different ways to define it. A few they must incorporate into their definition are: culture, race, and socioeconomic status.…
It’s fascinating how people have been able to make so many different definitions for the word culture; a word that was thought to have one singular definition. People of all cultures are unique not just in their methods and ways of life, but also in their definitions of culture. One person can describe culture as something that can bring family and a community together, but another person may define it as the exact opposite; something that tears people apart and in turn will rip apart a community. Neither of them are wrong or right however, because culture is something that is tangible. Culture is something that changes with time instead of against it.…

Vega 1 Breanna Vega Professor Olmos English 101 23 April 2016 Citizens Rule Democracy is known to be a strong form of government, because it gives full power to the people of the nation. Many argue about how a democracy works, but do not understand it includes difficult tasks for it to be successful. In Cornel West’s reading, “The Deep Democratic Tradition in America,” the idea of a strong democracy is by the people, but the promise of a democracy has failed. In order to keep the promise of strong democracy individual practices such as voting rights, the principle of protection, and the representation of each individual must be practiced under no circumstances.…
Nobody can deny the fact that culture generally mandates your views, perceptions, and ideas about the world and its qualities. However, while this may hold true, there are factors that can easily disregard and usurp culture from fully monopolizing one’s mindset. For example, Thomas Jefferson high school is a huge blend of cultural groups. There is little to no disparity, and all are seen unique, yet still the same as their peers. One’s experiences and culture both partially, whether equally or not, affect their views on the world.…
The American political culture contains various concepts and values. Indeed, Americans share the same perspectives, the support in the ideals of individualism and liberty. The idea of individualism encompasses the idea that we as Americans have rights. For instance, we can make independent decisions, and we are responsible for our lives. We define liberty as having the freedom to do as we please with limits in the interest of having a stable society.…
Argumentative Essay In discussions of the Palestinian and Israeli conflict one issue has been the rights to the land? On one hand the Israelis argue that it had been their land since before biblical times. On the other hand, Palestinians will contend it is and always has been their land and refuse to give up without a fight. My feelings on this issue are mixed.…
