This course has certainly influenced a new interpretation of the way I perceive the world. The complex, dynamic and unique effect that culture has on every individual is astonishing. This course has taught me the numerous diverse ways culture is defined, and how it shapes every aspect of our being as humans. Culture is sets of values and beliefs that are transmitted across generations. In which, every dimension contributes to our overall survival.
This course required us to look within our own cultures to view and understand the complexity of culture. I have learned to understand my culture more as well as others outside of my culture. Prior to this course when thinking of culture, I realized more of the smaller dimensions and not the larger. Specifically suggesting the impact of culture on personality, with regards to the United States. Some of my actions and decisions specifically regarding my workplace are shaped by the individualistic nature of the United States. Which is something I had not noticed prior to this course.
When considering culture and personality, I have been heavily influenced by personality traits associated with the culture of the United States. Though I can be reserved at times, I am open minded and rather extroverted. In which, my southern culture plays a large role in my extroversion and importance of social interactions and manners. From this I have learned the art of being understanding and helpful to all. In which, has helped develop some of my values and personality traits.
I have also learned what is considered normal to one culture may be viewed as abnormal to other. Being shy has often been viewed as abnormal within the American society. Similarly, myself being an educated and independent woman is also seen as abnormal in some
