Culture and Teamwork Exercise Questions Pre-Meeting Small Talk Video
How does the culture of the participants influence meeting start times and approach to small talk? What was the effect on the team atmosphere as a result? (3 marks)
Victor notes during his thoughts about the meeting, he was surprised that the amount of time that was spent discussing off-topic subjects at the beginning of the meeting. As a result he felt impatient and was looking at his watch which Rob took as a slight and the team atmosphere was made more tense because of it. So it can be said that the cultural differences between Victor’s monochronic time orientation and Rob’s polychronic time orientation had a negative effect on the team atmosphere.

Carol’s explanation of the newly formed team’s purpose was concise and straight to the point which contrasted with what appeared to be deference in Victor’s question to Carol about her setting up a meeting.
What could Rob and Adeola do differently to help welcome Victor and Nazneen before the meeting and include them in the discussion during the first team meeting? (2 marks)
Before the meeting, Rob and Adeola could have included Victor and Nazneen in their conversation about golf, since both Victor and Nazneen had comments they seemed to be willing to contribute to the conversation. Since Victor and Nazneen are new hires, Rob and Adeola could have tried to steer the pre-meeting small talk towards work experiences and included Victor and Nazneen in the conversation, which would allow them to build some familiarity and understand of each other’s competencies and experience levels.

She should take the time to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to articulate their thoughts during the meeting, even if it means that the meetings run a few minutes longer. Moreover, Carol’s dismissive attitude towards Victor’s clarifying questions lead to him feeling excluded as he note during his thoughts at the end of the video. Therefore, Carol should be more receptive towards clarifying questions and be willing to readily answer them. Furthermore, Carol’s seemingly overly concerned attitude toward Nazneen’s ability to handle the aggressiveness of the sales team lead to Nazneen feeling as if her competence was being called into question.
