Why Is Culture Important In Sociology

Culture represents a set of learned behaviors and philosophies that are characteristic of a particular society or another social group. Similarly, Cultural transmission is how culture is passed on through learning from one generation to another. Also, can be referred as Socialization. Culture within my family represents not only collecting identity and creating memories but most significantly to the “total way of life,” according to Ralph Linton. (Carol R. Ember 225). Ralph Linton emphasized common habits and behaviors in what he considered culture. Which the total way of life also includes how people think and feel about something. For example, since my mom knows how to make homemade Italian pasta, my father on the other hand does not know the way she makes it. So she shows him how to make an Italian pasta, but he makes his pasta based on his Mexican culture. He would add a lot of flavor to his pasta, such as spices, garlic and even makes his own sauce instead of marinara sauce for an Italian pasta dish, representing a Mexican pasta dish. The reality is, both of my parents intend to preserve their culture in many ways they can. Just like when my grandmother comes from Mexico. My grandmother being in America, she has her own way to preserve her culture whenever she cooks or goes grocery shopping. Recently, I went with my Italian mother. We go every year to the festival not only to spend time with one another, but to experience the Italian festivities and eat Italian pasta at our favorite restaurant Angelo’s Together. After we explore the streets of Little Italy, New York with many other Italians who are not only enjoying their night but conserving their values and traditions. My recent experience was amazing, simply because I was able to spend time with my mother and being able to adapt to her culture the way Italians celebrate the San Genaro festival. I was very interested of my culture, being exposed to adaptation. Whenever I have children in the future, I would love to take them to the Italian festival in New York and make them learn about the foods within a culture. Many Italian immigrants who moved to the New York City area kept celebrations of the feast of San Genaro alive and well in their new country, known as the United States of America. San Genaro is not only celebrated in Little Italy, New York, but in several parts of the world. This shows that they are mostly still preserving their Italian
