The researcher’s names who have found a technique that is a very effective literacy learning strategy for students, whose culture is different from the dominant American culture, were Hollins, King, Hayman, Pai, and Smith The focus of this study and this journal article is to show teachers what techniques are proven to be an effective literacy learning strategy that teachers can use to teach their students whose culture is different from the dominant American culture. These strategies can be used for any age group. The findings that were found by Hollins, King, Hayman, Pai, and Smith, that are effective strategies are that as a teacher, you should have the knowledge and the understanding of cultural characteristics that can be seen if different ethnic groups Other findings that I found while reading this article was that as a teacher we should develop some background knowledge on factual information for each of the ethnic groups, such as Latino, Native American, etc., to help you to make sure that your teaching is responsive to those students who are culturally diverse Teachers need to be able to create a curriculum that will be relevant to those children who have cultural differences The first type of curriculum is a formal plan for instruction, which means that as a teacher you should not pay more attention to one culture group than the others. The second type of curriculum is symbolic curriculum Symbolic curriculum is when a teacher displays symbols, images, etc. around the room, in order to teach their students skills, values, etc Symbolic curriculum is helpful in a classroom because it helps teachers to convey important actions and values about the cultural diversity that is around
