Leader: Principal in a MS District
Description of the Work Environment: This is a leader of a particular school in the Jackson Public School District. The leader came to the school when it was considered” minimum” but the district was failing. The faculty consisted of mostly Christians; however, there was one Panamanian female who was catholic and taught Spanish. The rest of the faculty consisted of mostly of African -Americans Christians and a few Caucasians Christians. The faculty contained mostly women with 15 men included and about 40% had less than five years of experience. The majority of the students are African-American s. She welcomed individuals who had a different approach to thinking and learning. She believed having diversity in the school and classroom would create a better learning environment for the students and teachers. Her logic for this process is because of her understanding that no two individuals think or learn the same. She proposed that having different styles will address those diverse learners and help build a more diverse culture which is beneficial in today’s multicultural society. Evidence of her accepting diversity was hiring teachers from various cultural, ethnic, and educational backgrounds. Every school year she holds a cultural festival that celebrates multiculturalism, which allows the students to choose a country they were interested in to do research and create a project that explains its different demographics. In conclusion of this cultural report the students, teachers, and staff would celebrate the different cultures by having a celebratory parade and multicultural food tasting. The learning community in the school included several academic goals that addressed the diverse learning styles of the students. It was well organized and transparent for the students to understand and achieve. Dealing with diversity in the classroom and also working with faculty has open my mind to what different levels of intelligence and talent many other individuals have to offer . I also figured out that in order for everyone to work as one to achieve a common goal everyone must include all their expertise and be will to accept differences in people. I think having a open mind towards education and diversity is the key to developing a successful program. My strengths in understanding diversity are that I can accept diversity and have an open mind towards change. I value what many people have to offer in education and I realize that having a different way of thinking can be very helpful because educating students may sometimes take a differentiated approach . I personally believe that my weaknesses in accepting cultural diversity are that I may not possess enough knowledge to truly have a good understanding of how to handle diversity issues. What this means if someone doesn’t accept another individual cultural differences what I would have issues with is addressing those difference and trying to identify a common ground for both individuals to meet on. I think if I continue to further educate myself and strengthen my depth of knowledge I could improve my cognitive awareness and develop effect methods to address those
