Cultural Versions Of Cinderella

There are many different cultural versions of the story of Cinderella. There is only one story of Cinderella that I grew up with and that is the “Disney movie version of Cinderella.” This particular version of the story most people of today’s culture are familiar with and know that it is truly loved by many. However, it is always great to venture out of the norm, and to look for other versions of the story that is so loved by many people. This is such a popular story that different cultures all over the world wanted to tell it in their own ways. With that being said, there is another version of this story that was so fascinating to compare and contrast with the version of the story I am familiar with, it is called, “Chinye: A West African Cinderella.” …show more content…
The story lines of the two versions were very different, but the two Cinderella’s were the same in the way they get treated by their Stepmother and Stepsisters like a slave. On the other hand, in my version Cinderella never was threatened in the way of getting beat, she just got locked in her room. In the African version if she did not come home with that gourd filled she was going to get beat. For the most part, these two versions have the same kind, gentle and hardworking …show more content…
The African version is more violent then the Disney movie version because of the way her Stepmother threatens to beat her if she does not do what is asked of her. Also the journey that she takes is a little to scary then the other version because it takes place in the dark woods. In the Disney version it just seems less violent and dark and more like the fairytale people come to know and love. Personally I would not want to subject my child to any dark fairytales because I do not want to have them grow up thinking in that way. I would like my child to grow up thinking of their mother in a way that, “my mom read me so many lovely fairytales and had me watch beautiful Disney movies.” If you read dark and inappropriate stories to your child it could make them grow up to not be a pleasant person. I don’t want that for my child I would like them to have the knowelege of nice and good things. That make them want to grow up and be a great person and not turn out to be a monster. What you teach your child when they are younger, can make them grow up to be just that kind of person when they are older. Having said all that, no one can ever go wrong with the Disney movie version of “Cinderella,” that is the one I grew up with and that will be the one I

For hundreds of years now children’s stories have been told; parents read them to their children, children read them on their own and once they grow out of them they pass them on. Have you ever looked in depth at these stories though? If you have, then you will see the typical stereotypes that are used in almost every single one of them. As the years go on though we are beginning to see different types of children’s books with different set-ups that give more equality to not only genders but to different races. I chose to use three books that I read over and over again as a little girl which are: Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and also Anastasia.…

Perrault version of Cinderella Vs the Grimm brothers’ version of Cinderella. “Fairy tale” is the term also used to describe something containing unusual happiness, like “fairy tale ending” a happing ending, or “fairy tale romance”, though not all fairy tales have a happy ending. According to Arthur Schlesinger, classical tales “tell children what they unconsciously know-that human nature is not innately good, that conflict is real, that life is harsh before it is, happy-and thereby reassure them about their own fears and their own sense of self” (229). Despite the fact that both Perrault and the Grimm brothers versions of Cinderella are fundamentally similar to each other, but the differences between them show two different moral universes.…
