As scholar Richard White explains, “the middle ground depended on the inability of both sides to gain their ends through force. The middle ground grew according to the need of people to find a means, other than force, to gain the cooperation or consent of foreigners. ”1In the case of the Hurons and Iroquois, these two political ensembles started to value the French as economical and political partners, and, likewise, the Jesuits, outnumbered and non-military trained, could not gain the Indians ' conversions by force in the long run. The middle ground appeared in the area of accommodation and common meaning between the Jesuits…

Native American culture has been slowly dying for a little over five centuries. It started in 1492 when Columbus sailed out on his historic voyage and it is still going on in present day America. Interactions between Native Americans and European settlers often resulted in the complete destruction of music considered “pagan” by the Europeans. Native people were continuously removed and relocated from their ancestral homelands, losing many of their mythologies and ancient music traditions in the process. The Native American people have tried to fight back numerous times but there numbers were decimated in the beginning with the introduction of diseases such as measles, typhus, and smallpox.…

I chose to do my culture immersion project on Native American cultures, because I had very little knowledge about them beyond a few movies and what I learned about in high school American history class, which was from the perspective of the white not the indigenous people. I was aware of some of the stereotypes, for example the perception that they are wild or savage, that they drink a lot, sell cheap smokes, that they gamble lots, the rich of them run casinos, and that they worship in strange ways. They also keep to themselves on the reservations and don't go to regular schools, and often protest oil pipelines. I knew some of the names of the tribes but didn't know that they were tribes, such as the Cherokee (Jeep), Iowa (state), Missouria…

“Blindly following ancient customs and traditions doesn’t mean that the dead are alive, but that the living are dead” (Ibn Khaldun). There are the benefits and costs that come along with any religion or custom, but as seen in the novel Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe demonstrates how the consequences of the customs of the Umuofia tribe outweigh the benefits. While many of the tribe members of Umuofia all follow the tribe’s customs, one member in particular who is well respected, lives by the village's customs especially by the rule of masculinity, his name is Okonkwo. As a child, Okonkwo grew up with a father who was seen by the village more as a woman than a man, and all because he showed his emotions and rather play the flute than fight.…
