Should Schools Start Taking Bullying More Seriously? Throughout the United States, 28 percent of students in grades 6 through 12 have experienced some type of bullying (Facts About Bullying). Studies show the most recognized types of bullying are verbal and social. Physical bullying and cyberbullying are happening the least often but still need to be focused on. Various types of these bullying styles can be name calling, teasing, spreading rumors and lies, pushing, hitting or kicking, being left out, threatening, stealing someone’s belonging, sexual harassment and e-mail or social media bullying. Another study shows that 70.6% of students have witnessed bullying in their school and 70.4% of staff in the schools have witnessed bullying as well. It has been determined that in schools or on school property is where most of the bullying occurs (Bradshaw). Bullying shouldn’t be taken lightly. Most schools have tried to enforce a no tolerance policy for bullying throughout the schools, but that does not always have an affect on students. The school systems need to enforce a set of disciplinary consequences for when any kind ,or level, of bullying occurs, whether it be verbal, physical, or over social media. Students need to disciplined at a more intense level for the punishment to be effective. The school systems need to have specific punishments in place for the different levels of bullying, even though all bullying should be punished, those using physical bullying should be punished to more extent than someone calling someone a bad name or taunting someone. Providing these disciplinary list will show students that bullying is not acceptable and will not be tolerated (Bullying
