Summary “You don’t hurt Arnie, you just don’t.” said Arnie’s older brother, Gilbert, who takes care of him on the daily. Arnie wasn’t supposed to make it passed a young age due to his mental disabilities, but they are celebrating his eighteenth birthday in the film. Their father passed away years ago and their mother is so fat that she can’t get off the couch, let alone out of the house. They have two sisters who claim they do more to take care of Arnie than Gilbert, but that is false, and it clearly shows throughout the movie. Wherever Gilbert is, Arnie is right there with him, Gilbert tucks him in at night and even bathes him. Keatts for introducing me to what is now one of my favorite movies. It was strange because I was reading off the list of movies to one of my friends outside of my sociology class because she was going to watch one with me and as soon as I got “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” out of my mouth, she said that’s the one we had to watch. I am so glad she told me to watch it because the movie was great, it had some humor in it but it also had some serious and sad parts to it. I was slightly surprised by my reaction to the movie because I usually don’t like sad movies but this one was laid out perfectly, the humorous parts overruled the sad parts. I really enjoyed this movie a lot and I even learned several things through watching it, especially the fact of how hard it must be living with one parent who physically cannot be a good parent and having a younger brother with mental disabilities who needs twenty-four-hour care and not an adult to do so. This movie showed several sociological concepts and I picked out the few that stood out the most to me with the most
