Where I’m from, Jamaica, a majority of the inhabitants believe homosexuality is wrong and therefore it is outlawed, but does this make it wrong? Does my own belief of it being wrong stem solely from the cultural norms of my birth place? It’s harder to tell in a region consisting of only one culture. In an area such as the United States of America where there is more you have multiple cultures; you are now able to better assess the situation given the fact that you have access to so many different viewpoints. Thus, it became clear to me that my society’s culture did lead me to my homophobic belief. Had I grown up in a more accepting area I would have felt differently about the subject. In seeing that your belief isn’t necessarily your own but the people who raised you, it puts things into perspective. Thinking critically about society’s role in your individuality helps you to better determine what is ethical in your own eyes; you begin to adopt my own set of beliefs and thus became more
