Cultural Lag Observation

In order to scientifically analyze a situation or problem we must first observe it; in social science, we must observe the real world (Hunt & Colander, 2011). In order to accomplish this task, I chose to observe the use of technologies in a mid-range restaurant. The restaurant is known for being family friendly, but also caters to the sports enthusiast. The technologies readily available to customers include flat screen TV's displaying various sporting events, a tablet at each table that offers the ability to order, pay, play games and explore the area, free WiFi is provided though out the location, and the decor is bursting with festive lighting for the season. Additionally, there were many cell phones and smart phones visible on tables or in use, and a few personal tablets. The clientele was a mixture of families, both young and old, college age individuals, teenagers, older individuals, couples of various age ranges, singles, and groups. Cultural lag occurs when groups in society fail to keep pace with advances in society or sciences (Hunt & Colander, 2011). The virtual waiter seems to be a source of confusion for many people. It is seen by some as something unnecessary, they prefer the interaction with real people; however, for others it creates questions and confusion. Some believe it is a way for the waiter to be replaced and provides a way to avoid our talking to one another (Oremus, 2013). While others are simply confused as to whether or not a tip is required when they order through a tablet (Bogleheads.com, 2014).
