First of all, I have to say that this project encouraged me to perceive a completely different culture than my own. Since I am an international student in the US, any culture could be a different perspective for me. However, the cultural group I decided immense myself in was white southern family. My girlfriend, Kirstin, is one of the reasons that make me choose her family to observe for this project. She and her family are born and raised Baton Rouge people. According to her mother, Jeri Ann, their great ancestors migrated here from Germany. To complete my project, I spend too many times with Kirstin's family. Thanks to them, they welcomed me all the time. It was really interesting to me because you cannot spend that much time with your girlfriend's …show more content…
Usually, the cultural group I was studying they go to an Easter service at church, but I didn’t attend that day. My girlfriend Kirstin told me the meaning of the holiday is about Jesus dying on the cross for their sins. They celebrate his death because God gave his only son to die on the cross for our sins and a few days later he rose from the dead. Kirstin came and picked me up after church and we were going to her grandparents’ house to celebrate Easter. Her father’s side of the family was all there including aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents’, great grandmother (She impressed me a lot, she is 93 and she still aware of everything), and her immediate family. They prepared a delicious lunch that we prayed over before eating. After that, their little cousins, her, and her sisters got Easter presents from their grandparents. I was the minority of the group there and felt out of place because it wasn’t my family and I look different being Turkish. Then some of the adults went outside to hide eggs for the younger kids to hunt. It was a rainy Easter unfortunate and according to Jeri Ann, it is way more fun when it’s the sun shining. Kirstin, I, her sisters, and their boyfriends went to play croquet which is a yearly tradition for their family. Usually, the adult family members participate, but it was raining and we were playing in rain ponchos. I’ve never played croquet before. It was super fun, but I …show more content…
Once again Turkey does not have this holiday and I had never been to a thanksgiving. Kirstin told me the meaning of thanksgiving is to remember all the things you are thankful for and to eat a bunch a delicious food. For this holiday I was able to go visit her mom’s side of the family. We went to her other grandparents’ house in Mississippi. We took a day trip over there and came back that evening. The family there was her grandfather, step-grandmother, uncle, aunt, cousins, her dad’s parents, immediate family, and step-grandmothers family. When we got there we just visited with family and shotguns outside at targets and rode around on the golf cart. They have a lot of land at their home and it was a lot of fun. All of the people that were there we got in a circle, held hands and prayed over the thanksgiving lunch. Some people sat inside at the two tables they had and I and Kirstin and some others sat outside on the deck. I expected to have a thanksgiving dinner like in the movies and everyone would be sitting around a huge table with a turkey in the middle. Then everyone tells what they are thankful for. However, it was just a small pray. After we ate, we visited some more and shotguns we left that evening to return home. I learned that not everyone sits around a big table or has a dinner rather than a lunch. Kirstin told me that some people do a lunch, dinner, in between those

Introduction I originally was going to interview a girl from Singapore for this paper, but I had to go back home and I was not able to talk with her after all. So while I was back in my home town I interviewed a girl I went to school with, and for the sake of the paper I am going to refer to her as Sally. Before interviewing Sally I knew how our physical appearances differed, but I didn’t realize how culturally different we were. Understanding Others Sally is different from me in number of ways, but some of our differences are she is a mother, she refers to herself as a Christian, she still lives in the town she grew up in, and she has a job.…

Every year on Thanksgiving break I have gone to my grandparents house to stay for the week. For me this is important because my grandparents live a good ways away and I barely get to see them. This became a tradition when I moved away from where they live because that's when our other traditions ended like on wednesdays we used to meet somewhere and eat dinner but we can’t do that any more so we thought that Thanksgiving break is a good time to go see them because we have off school and they can get off work. The whole time we are up there we laugh cook and have fun together.…

Through creation of a POSTER/INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO OF RECIPE, Katie Chambers and I plan to reflect on the Spanish language and presence of Hispanics in the US that have had existential impact on factors that compose American culture. First, my partner and I will interview a Latinx/Hispanic person within our community and will use elements from our interviewee's life story to inform our cultural artifact. We believe using a POSTER/VIDEO OF RECIPE is the best way to present the information we gain from our interview because it allows the audience to follow a visual representation while we explain how our interviewee has been impacted by cultural factors in the US. The previous course projects completed will serve to guide our questions during the interview session.…

The individual that I chose for my interview is a 37 year old male who was born and raised in Germany, but presently resides in northern Indiana. He relocated to the United States for work-related reasons. His name is Michael Drue and he is, at this time, married to my first cousin Krisha, a native English speaker, having been born in the United States. I chose Michael as the person of interest for my intercultural interview not only because he is speaks English as a second language, but also because of the point of view he was able to give me regarding the difficulties that language and cultural barriers may present in an interpersonal relationship. When I enquired at what age he was when he started to learn English as his second language,…
