Cultural Interview Paper

For this paper I chose to interview a friend of mine, a former co-worker, Ramesh. We worked together several years ago at Wal-Mart. I would spend my breaks with him and his wife. His culture is very interesting to me as well as his opinion of his home culture. He has lived in America for many years, he moved here with his new wife as a young man to go to college.
Ramesh is from a very wealthy Hindu family in south India, his father is the prince over a territory there. He moved here with his wife in the early 1970’s. He spoke of the beautiful surroundings and the lush gardens his mother had that had a small creek running though it, a rare sight in the desert. He described the heat and how the temperature was always like American summers, even

His family had a room dedicated to worship in the home where they would go to pray and make offerings to the gods several times a day. Only on Hindu holy days did they go to the temple. The Hindu bible is the Vedas; they worship one supreme god, Brahman, which is over all of the other nearly 330 million other smaller gods. A person who is born deformed or with special needs is worshipped in India was gods. They see this kind of thing as a positive thing rather than a bad thing. Ramesh and his wife no longer consider themselves Hindu, although their parents still after 40 years do not know this. It would be bring shame to their families in …show more content…
The worst thing as a child that I remember was being drug to church with my mother; I was still not forced to believe what she believed. During my friendship with Ramesh and his wife my eyes have definitely been opened to the things we take for granted here in America. Just the minimal Ramesh has described about the Hindu religion and the rituals and regulations seem overwhelming. They must memorize all of these things. I am more appreciative of the freedom I have to worship and believe as I wish to even eat what I wish. When made aware of the differences in the Indian culture from ours, we seem to have it made here in America. It kind of amazes me that even at 60+ years of age Ramesh still chooses to not tell his parents that he does not practice the Hindu religion

This interview took place in Dean Vargas’ office. As a first year advisor in the school of engineering, she has been busy in the past month assisting first year students in picking which type of engineering they are most interested in and helping them to plan their schedules for the upcoming year. This meant that she did not have the time to meet somewhere else. If this were not a factor, I would have suggested meeting in a cafe as that would have caused Dean Vargas to view me less as one of her many students and more as an individual woman, coming to her for assistance in navigating the unique set of circumstance women engineers need to navigate. I believe that as a result of holding the meeting in her office and not in a secondary location,…

Vasant and Champa live in the US, and the differences between Indian and American culture have an effect on them and particularly on their children. Ravi and Geeta, as well as the parents, are part of two cultures, as are many families in the U.S. Families in this situation often find themselves trying to balance “value systems and behaviors” in order to belong in both of the cultures that they belong to, which can lead to significant conflict and need to compromise. (Moore and Asay, pg. 107). By contrast, the extended family in India is completely immersed in Indian culture, and when Ravi and the family go to visit, Ravi finds that the extended family in India doesn’t even question the traditional system for marriage there. Some of Ravi’s American friends at home have the opposite influence.…

The number one thing I learned in today’s class on cross-cultural competencies was how important situational awareness can be when it comes to counterinsurgency tactics. I knew that it’s important to get a complete feel for your environment, so you can figure out the difference between what the people want and what they need. It’s imperative for a counterinsurgency team to become culturally proficient within their area of operation (AO). This comes with time and educating yourself with the society within your footprint. It’s not always important to know how the entire country works, but more about the people you interact with on a daily basis.…

Cultural competency is the ability to have an understanding of different cultures points of views and world knowledge. It is important to realize that although people will strive to have cultural competency, it will always be something we are moving toward, not something we can have completely for all cultures. Furthermore, people must understand how their own culture can change their view of other people and create biases that may not be noticeable without this culturally competent awareness. Being open to and learning about how other people view and experience the world and events in it is essential to cultural competency and a necessary part of working with others (Lee, 2006). As counselors, cultural competency is even more notably essential.…

I was born to a Hindu family – and therefore, I call myself a Hindu, based on the cultural exposures that I have had through my family and my religious community. And yet Hinduism for me is like a foundation, one on which I have built my own perceptions of God and religion, based on my own life experiences. My particular views may therefore seem unique at best, blasphemous at worst – but they will have a great impact on how I act as a patient, and as a physician. Like many Hindus, I believe in reincarnation. Traditionally, reincarnation means that after death, souls are reborn many times to repay their debts, to right their wrongs, and to rid themselves of their past karmas, or deeds, until they are ready to become one with God.…

This can be very well seen through the character of Simran’s father, Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri). He keeps “Indian culture” even in his home in a foreign land. Despite living in London for more than 20 years, his Indian values and his love for the Indian culture is not sublimed. He misses his homeland and culture in an alien land proves that he does not want to let go what represents him and is his, his Indian culture. He keeps an idol of goddess in his shop, in London and get furious when Raj breaks it in the act of stealing beer.…
