Cultural Intelligence Essay
“Cultural intelligence is a theory within management and organizational psychology which states that understanding the impact of an individual’s cultural background on their behavior is essential for effective business, and measuring an individual’s ability to engage successfully in any environment or social setting.” (Wikipedia)
One’s cultural intelligence (or cultural quotient) includes three components that work together: cognitive, emotional, and physical. The cognitive component involves a person’s observational and learning skills and the ability to pick up on clues and understanding the subtleties of others. Spacial intelligence knowing how close to stand to another person when speaking to them, where to sit at a meeting, how chairs are arranged, whether to bow, shake hands, or touch during a greeting, and the ability to understand, anticipate, and when the situation requires it, imitate certain body language.
Intrapersonal intelligence is defined by having awareness of your own cultural style makes it easier to compare yourself to others and possibly adjust your behavior to be compatible in cross-cultural situations.
Interpersonal intelligence is a skill separate from language or purely academic knowledge of another culture. Interpersonal intelligence is the ability to interpret the intentions or desires of others, even when they might not be obvious. Basically, it’s reading people so that you can better understand how to interact with them.
Some of the most important things to remember when interacting well with people from other cultures are to interact well with people from other cultures, it helps to: speak a bit of their language, know how to physically interact with them (how close to stand, how they generally feel about physical contact), to know about your own culture, and to know and understand the similarities and differences between your culture and that of another.
