In 1821, Mexico had declared independence from Spain. Its land stretched from Guatemala to Oregon and it was equal to the size of the United States. Americans wanted to push their own culture on them, an action called cultural imperialism. Mexico had had their own culture for so long that they weren’t ready to give it up. The United States army crossed the Nueces River and began to trek towards the Rio Grande. Mexico thought this was an invasion, so it provoked them causing to defend themselves. An act of war had already begun when the U.S. and Texas signed a treaty with each other. But, when America crossed the Nueces River and headed just North of the Rio Grande, Mexico thought it was an invasion. Mexico only attacked as self-defense (Doc C).
