Cultural Identity
According to Howard’s Identity Development phases, there are different development phases depending on the ethnicity and race. For example, there are five stages of Black Development including pre-counter, encounter, immersion emersion, internalization, and internalization commitment. There are six stages of White Development, such as contact, disintegration, reintegration, pseudo-independence, immersion-emersion, and autonomy.

In Vietnam, people are more conservative and secretive about things. They believe that girls don’t have to be good in school because they can be a stay home mom. I don’t believe in this because women are as smart as men. People in Vietnam don’t believe that; therefore, women don’t try to prove themselves. I’m a little bit conservative because I think it is good for my safety. As a girl, I don’t like to show a lot of skin when I’m walking at night or alone because it is dangerous for me. I live in Vietnam, where guys would stare and harass girls if they show a lot of skin; therefore I’m aware of it. Even though America is different and safer, I still don’t want to cause any attention because there is a higher chance of getting raped or kidnaped. There are things I don’t like about Vietnam, but there are some things that I like. For example, parents are more strict about school; therefore, almost every student works hard in school. I like this because parents motivation and disciplines will make their kids take school more seriously. Also, most students in Vietnam start to learned college level math in middle school; therefore, they are good at Math. This can be stressful for a lot of kids at such a young age, but this is why most of my friends in Vietnam are better at math than I

We do not even have the stereotypical small-town Friday Night Lights to look forward to as none of the three schools in the area can field a high school football team.…

As a Hispanic male, I found the Black Identity Development Model applied more to my personal experiences. However, I do not feel that this model accurately articulates distinct stages (or phases) for me, rather it helps to describe particular feelings, moments, conversations, and ideas I have experienced. I have experienced on several occasions aspects of the Encounter Phases, at times in a very direct way. I grew up in a large city in Texas where there were obvious and intentional racial divides. As a child, there was an ever present influence on who I should associate with and with whom I should not.…
