Lifelong learning and critical self-reflection:
I think enacting cultural humility’s goal of lifelong learning and critical self-reflection requires a significant amount personal work before, during, and after every interaction with Reverend Joseph Dantica. To be able to learn from Rev. Dantica and engage with him in a constructive manner, I need understand my own values and cultural perspectives. It is hard not to allow my own cultural values to influence my care of Rev. Dantica if I believe my values to be universal. In recognizing differences in values, I need to be sure I don’t allow my values to influence my care of Rev. Dantica. I need to remember that I’m not an expert on Rev. Dantica and his body. Rev. Dantica needs to be the expert on himself. Thus, I need to seek out his knowledge, cultural priorities, and practices with regards to his health and his body. These things should be integral to his medical care. For instance, Rev. Dantica strongly believes that herbal medicines are important to his well-being. Furthermore, because Rev. Dantica is the expert on his body, his medical complaints, such as those of “acute abdominal pain, nausea, and loss of appetite”, should be taken very seriously and responded to in an appropriate and timely manner (p. 238). The hospital was very slow in responding to Rev. Dantica’s health complaints and symptoms. Furthermore, if I’m not sure about how to treat Rev. Dantica, I need to seek out someone who can. It took 24 hours for a physician to actually see Rev. Dantica and act on the findings of medical
