Cultural Diversity Practicum

I am a junior and I am majoring in Physical and Health Education and I did my cultural diversity practicum at a Hutterite colony called Wheatland Colony School near Tower City, North Dakota. Going into my practicum I really did not know what to expect other than it was not going to be the same as a normal classroom setting. I thought that I would be in the gym with the gym teacher for at least some of the practicum but soon found out that I would not be in the gym at all.
When I first arrived, the teacher told me that they only had five kids and they had a kindergartener, 5th grader, 8th grader, and two 10th grader who were about to finish their schooling. She also said that she was only the morning teacher and that an afternoon teacher came

She said they were not allowed to watch TV but could have iPhones, computers, and listen to radio. I really do not understand how someone can have an iPhone and a computer but can not watch TV. Have those things is basically having a TV. The kids were also not allowed to have gaming systems like Xbox or PlayStation but a few of the kids play games on their phones. I felt like some of the rules contradicted each other.
When it came to classroom technology, I think some of the rules did not apply or they were more lenient. For history class, the students got to watch a daily podcast called “CNN” Student News” that briefly described the current news stories throughout the United States and the rest of the world. In English the students were allowed to watch movies when learning about Shakespeare and other famous

The teacher told me that he was diagnosed with ADHD. So some of the challenges I had with him was getting him to stay on topic and getting him to really focus on doing the best effort on his school work. When he had to sit for a long period of time, we had him sit on a chair that had a rounded out bottom so it could wobble around. I think this really helped him stay focused and on topic by letting him move around a little bit but still not distracting others. Another thing that I think helped him was the four breaks they got throughout the day. This helped him burn off a lot of pent up energy and when he came back into the classroom after break, it seemed like he was more attentive. Working with this student was the most challenging but it was by far the most

History plays one of the most prominent roles in shaping our lives today. Studying the behavior of the elderly, is key in influencing our behavior on a daily basis. The youth fail to behold of the privileges that are given to them today, through the hard work of our ancestors. An accurate example of this is seen in both the gender roles and sexuality in the United States. There are now women running for presidency, and all gender welcoming bathrooms in California.…

Ruth Macklin believes that the cultural diversity we have in America creates problems for both physicians and patients. I consider the abundance of cultural diversity to be a challenge, and the physicians and patients need to both learn to clearly communicate their stances and reach a solution. As physicians, it is their duty to listen to the patient and demonstrate sensitivity to their situation, a different background should not step in the way of that. There are many cases of multiculturism being present in healthcare that have solutions. I will be discussing how Voodoo, Judaism, Female Genital Mutilation and the Santeria’s practices with mercury are all apart of multiculturism, the difficulties they pose in today’s society, and Ruth Macklin’s perspective on how we can go about handling these challenges.…

I do agree with Marx that there is blind faith involved in many religions. While growing up a majority of people were instilled with the idea of going to church every weekend typically on a Sunday for service or Sunday school that by doing so it would save their souls. If the faithful truly internalize a system of religious rewards and punishments, their religion becomes a powerful means of controlling their beliefs, behavior, and what they teach their children. Cultural Competence Healthcare is becoming diverse with the patient population from many different race, cultures and ethnicity. Nurses take care of patients from many different types of heritage and background, therefore we need to be culturally competent while providing care. By taking the Cultural Diversity Self-Assessment (IllinoisCTE, n.d.), I was able to determine my own beliefs toward different cultures. The assessment tool is comprised of a one to five rating scale in regards to how strongly I agree with a question.…

I think that training professionals on the topic of diversity is not enough, but also specialized training in the topic of the LGBTQ community will help school counselors have better relationships with their students thus making it known that they are a safe space to come and talk to. It’s important to implement programs that are taught at every level so students who do and don’t identify as LGBTQ can learn about their classmates and neighbors and build stronger communication skills leading to better relationships. Strategies that are inclusive will open the door to open communication and hopefully show LGBTQ youth that professional school counselors are not just implementing strategies, but also advocating for them and teaching them empowerment…

I have experienced how it feels being in two different cultures, I lived in India for most of my life with my grandparents and when I came here and went to school it was a culture shock. In India I had to wear a uniform to school everyday and had to be very carefull if i was wearing any accessories, or nail paint. However here in America I did not have to worry about getting my uniform ready or having any jewelry on I could do whatever I wanted, and wear what I desired. Although, I had a tough time adjusting to the school system, I quickly figured out how to speak up and made a diverse group of friends. When I came to the school many kids anticipated that I had never been to America or that I had never spoken English, but as I walked in confident on my first day of school kids watched astonished that I could speak English.…

Are issues of diversity understood/represented fairly, realistically, accurately or problematically? The socio culture influences that impact students, teachers, schools and the community has changed immensely over the years due the exposure and availability to resources and technology readily available. Realistically schools need to keep up to date with these changes in order to support students, teachers and the community. Primary schools in Warragul are well presented and have great values and beliefs within their school community according to their websites, when taking a deeper insight into the diversity of what any of the schools in the area have to offer it seems quite one dimensional.…

He responds well when teachers or adults make connections to his everyday life or by providing examples that include examples with his sister or family members. This focus child also enjoys knowing why he needs to do something and the purpose for it. As teachers, we know there are reasons for the activities and lessons that we implement into our instruction but it is also important for our children to know the purpose as well. This is why I put feedback on his work sampling to ensure he knew why we were making and revising predictions. For example, I wrote, “This is what good readers do!”…
