Hispanics/Latinos are the largest and most rapidly growing ethnic group in the United States, and Latinos/Hispanics accounted for 50% of the total population growth. The Hispanic population covers people from 26 countries. “The Hispanic culture is one of the fastest growing cultural groups in the United States. The U.S. Census data indicates that Hispanics will be the largest minority group by the year 2050” (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1992). Hispanics in the United States includes any person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. A great Social Worker requires a person being culturally competent. Cultural Competency is the “cultural and linguistic competence is a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals that enables effective work in cross-cultural situations” ( Dettlaff & Rycraft, 2014, pg. 110). Working within this field, no one family situation or culture will be the same. As a social worker, it is our job, to become aware and have basic knowledge of these things. Social workers should obtain education about and seek to understand the nature of social diversity and oppression with respect to race,ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, political belief,religion, and mental or physical disability. Recognizing other shortcomings and empathizing with their needs could help with engagement process. The assessment stage is the process of evaluating the older person to assist with services and background information. According to McInnis-Dittrich (2014), “an assessment serves as the basis for identifying how support or rehabilitative services can help older adults to maintain independent and satisfying lifestyles” (p.83). The assessment is a way to build upon the client's strengths in order address their challenges and provide the necessary tools to help. The interventions stage the social worker will do one of two things. They will help the client change a problem that could be harmful to their well-being or help them adjust to the problem that cannot change. To help them address their intervention a social worker can utilize the empowerment theory that will give the client the push they need.
