Diversity is a key element to consider when providing patient centered care. Understanding that individuals are unique in various ways and recognizing these differences is the key to providing excellent care. Diversity can be based on various factors such as race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, social economic factors as well as physical abilities and political affiliation. As such, there are many diverse groups in America. Among these groups, Asian Americans make up the largest group.…
Focusing on a culture can clarify unknown things we are ignorant about. Choosing a new society to evaluate and discuss is very hard because of the cultural diversity in the current world. Also, each culture is unique and distinguished from others in many things. However, Mexican culture is highly intriguing and it is highly affected today by the violent drug Cartels, criminal organizations that deal with narcotics. In addition, Mexico is the main drug supplier for the United States; drug cartels have become increasingly lucrative and militarized, “Most of the adult urban population of Mexico, 10.4% of them (representing 5.2 million people in total) had used illicit substances at some point in their lifetime”.…
Legislation reflecting the social climate is enacted whenever people become acutely aware of the lack of cultural homogeneity. People tend to react negatively when they feel normal changing. Native residents share common values and beliefs that create a culture of sameness, however, when refugees come in a culture of difference is created, and this difference threatens their homogeneity. The percentage of refugees that are accepted for the resettlement process is less than 1%. However, refugees are resettled in clustered groups which makes the native residents feel a change in homogeneity.…
Obviously, Santa Barbara is concerned with its aesthetic appearance to visitors, to wit, building facades are well kept, downtown sidewalks are made of cobble stoned and cleaned every day at dawn. Blooming seasonal flowers are planted in large, ceramic, flower pots that line each side of downtown main street. In addition, city workers maintain the parks and recreation areas by grooming aged oak trees and dense foliage giving these areas a pristine look. Santa Barbara shows its support of the cultural diversity within its citizenry by creating festivals and closing its streets for traditional parades. In addition, various genres of art are on public display to enhance the awareness of the city's talented artists.…
The media does not represent the diversity of America. Magazines, TV shows, movies, and models all make up media, but there are almost no non-white or black people that we see. The media should be more representative of people of color, other than African American. Asians and Latinos make up about 23% of all America. That’s nearly 905 million people in America that are barely, or not at all represented.…
Cultural difference make America what it is today. The variety makes for new experiences daily that you wouldn’t see anywhere else in the world. We shouldn’t shut people out who are different. Today in American culture, and many cultures across the world, "race" has become a means of human identification. Anthropologist, Audrey Smedley, researched how this sense of self identification has lead to negative effects, and how this actuality has developed over time. Examples of these negative effects as a result of racial identification have played a great role in America's history, and anthropologist, Faye V. Harrison delves into how it has shaped our view on "race" today, and ways in which anthropological discourse on race could benefit the public. Both articles discuss how "race" has transformed into a new identity through which we determine social structure. It influences us daily in how we perceive ourselves and others, leading…
America is one of the greatest countries in the world today and this is because of things that happened in its past. Americans are diverse due to their humble beginnings, and are patriotic and unified under America.…
“Keep your language. Love its sounds, its modulation, its rhythm. But try to march together with men of different languages, remote from your own, who wish like you for a more just and human world” (qtd in Goodreads.com). The world that surrounds humans is full of diversity. Humans have developed different languages, ideologies, and religions.…
As a New Yorker, I was provided with many opportunities to experience the cultural richness in America. I spend most of my life surrounded with the bustling borough of Manhattan in neighborhoods such as Koreatown, Little Italy, and Chinatown. Therefore, I was already exposed to the distinct food of each country: kimchi for Koreans, fried rice for Chinese and pasta for Italians. However, these neighborhoods were a certain aspect of New York. I wanted to experience unique and underrated places such as the Buffalo Niagara Region.…

I am a junior and I am majoring in Physical and Health Education and I did my cultural diversity practicum at a Hutterite colony called Wheatland Colony School near Tower City, North Dakota. Going into my practicum I really did not know what to expect other than it was not going to be the same as a normal classroom setting. I thought that I would be in the gym with the gym teacher for at least some of the practicum but soon found out that I would not be in the gym at all. When I first arrived, the teacher told me that they only had five kids and they had a kindergartener, 5th grader, 8th grader, and two 10th grader who were about to finish their schooling. She also said that she was only the morning teacher and that an afternoon teacher came…
Canada is often referred to as a cultural mosaic, meaning that it is a nation that considers different races, ethnicities, and otherness of its citizens an essential part to its existence (Immigration, 2011). Immigration is the main reason why Canada is referred to as the cultural mosaic because many people immigrate to Canada from different places. The people who immigrate to Canada often have different religious and beliefs and in Canada they are allowed to practice whatever they like and are not required to assimilate the Canadian lifestyle. Immigration has been around for many years in Canada. This essay will look at the history of immigration, the rules and regulations for entering Canada, and how people can apply and qualify.…
More and more immigrants are traveling to America each year in search of the “American Dream”. Most of those immigrants already know English. In order for American students to stand out, they need to learn another language to make them look more complex between other competitors, which lowers the competition and gives them different…
