History plays one of the most prominent roles in shaping our lives today. Studying the behavior of the elderly, is key in influencing our behavior on a daily basis. The youth fail to behold of the privileges that are given to them today, through the hard work of our ancestors. An accurate example of this is seen in both the gender roles and sexuality in the United States. There are now women running for presidency, and all gender welcoming bathrooms in California.…
However, it has also allowed for the spread of one the worst ideas in human history: racism. Racism will never truly come to an end, no matter how many black presidents we have, or how many bills we pass, some Americans will always have a deep rooted feeling of superiority. Due to the nature of the internet, meaning that you are literally behind a screen when accessing it, some users feel comfortable using racial slurs in situations where they otherwise wouldn’t, or express racist views when they otherwise wouldn’t. This is troubling because online discourse communities often mimic real life communities, and vice versa, in that more experienced members have a great deal of influence over newer members, as evidenced by Jones’ research (27-31). When a senior director of communications like Justine Sacco tweets about Africans having aids, Germans smelling bad, and the British having bad teeth, she is influencing young users in the worst way possible.…

Ruth Macklin believes that the cultural diversity we have in America creates problems for both physicians and patients. I consider the abundance of cultural diversity to be a challenge, and the physicians and patients need to both learn to clearly communicate their stances and reach a solution. As physicians, it is their duty to listen to the patient and demonstrate sensitivity to their situation, a different background should not step in the way of that. There are many cases of multiculturism being present in healthcare that have solutions. I will be discussing how Voodoo, Judaism, Female Genital Mutilation and the Santeria’s practices with mercury are all apart of multiculturism, the difficulties they pose in today’s society, and Ruth Macklin’s perspective on how we can go about handling these challenges.…
The debate, “Does America Cherish Diversity?” has a great popularity, and has brought a great deal of unique opinions. Patel believes that America cherishes it’s diversity, and McGregor does not think America cherishes it’s diversity. Our class overall believed that America does cherish it’s diversity, but I'm writing this to tell you my opinion not theirs. My opinion on the matter is that America does not cherish it’s diversity, and they should not have to, but they should respect other’s diversity, and others should respect their diversity from them. There are many reasons I believe America does not cherish diversity.…
Cultural Diversity in Chicago According to the Book “Lost Chicago”; the recorded history begins with two extraordinary Frenchmen, Jacques Marquette, and Louis Jolliet. In 1673, on their way back to Green Bay, following their exploration of the Mississippi, Marquette and Jolliet crossed the Chicago portage. “They found the countryside along the Illinois River rich and full of promise.” In July of 1803, Captain John Whistler, under orders from General Henry Dearborn, came to Chicago to build it.…
Exclusivists, in terms of religion, can be compared with inclusivism and spiritual shopping (introduced later). It is those people that, obviously, taken an exclusivist approach to how they view the growing diversity in The United States. Simply put, it is those that think they and their church is right and that others of other faiths are wrong. In The United States this is mostly represented by Christian Exclusivists, however, this could be because there is more Christians than other religions. Wuthnow does admit that many (but not all) exclusivists view diversity as a negative.…
If I would have been a social worker in the Department of Human Services at this time I would have done several things differently. If one of my coworkers stated that they had a new client from another country I would first ask them what they know about the culture. I would ask this because ways of life depend on what part of the world you are from. I would want my coworkers and agency to work with and handle these cases with respect and dignity. If they did not know anything about their culture I would suggest they look in the library or google how things are handled in the family’s home country.…
It is important to understand our diverse America because not everybody is the same. Everybody that lives in America is similar and different. We all look different, but at a certain extent we are all the same. The citizens of America all have different DNA, which makes us special in our own way. When I was first introduced to a whole different aspect of color, my eyes were open to the thought that nobody on Earth looks the same.…
The media does not represent the diversity of America. Magazines, TV shows, movies, and models all make up media, but there are almost no non-white or black people that we see. The media should be more representative of people of color, other than African American. Asians and Latinos make up about 23% of all America. That’s nearly 905 million people in America that are barely, or not at all represented.…
