Cultural Dissemination In The Ancient World

Cultural dissemination was seen throughout the Ancient World. Each civilisation built on the legacy of the previous one, modifying it to fit their own needs. Some examples of legacies being passed on to different cultures are present in Sumerians throughout Mesopotamia, Greek in the Near East, and Roman culture during the Principate. Each preceding civilisation had a major impact on the social, economical, and political shape of the former cultures. Sumerians laid the foundation of the social, economical and political framework of Mesopotamia. They developed vital things that would continue to be used hundreds of years after their demise. For example, they created a system of writing called cuneiform. This was vital because it gave Sumerians the ability chart surpluses of food and money. Soon though the use of cuneiform spread far past its original purpose, creating artistic works like epic poetry, as well as written records in government. They also discovered a system of mathematics using a base of 60. Allowing them to give things specific values, which made record keeping easier. Following Alexander the Greats death the Hellenistic Age began. This period was named this as Greek was becoming the common culture through all countries in the Near East. With various people such as artists and craftsmen, leaving Greece and heading to the Near East in hopes of better opportunities as well as wealth and fame, the influence of Greek culture only grew. Greek soon became the language of the educated and its arts and literature was held in the highest esteem, with the other civilisation in the Near East scrambling to emulate it.
