Cultural Differences In The Sniper And The Sniper

Improved Essays
We live on a planet of sin, where humans will constantly be in conflict, whether it be a war between two countries, two religions, or two people. Regardless of the specifics, it’s the people involved, their choices, and every loss of life that ultimately determines the outcome of the conflict. Take two men from opposite sides of the world. Different cultures. Different lifestyles. Both trapped in exasperate countries with grave conflict. A sniper in one story, a barber in the other. The two have the chance to commit reprobate actions that will change the course of their life and have crucial, possibly detrimental effects on their countries. Although the short stories are about distinct individuals, these separate tales of raw emotion, …show more content…
With weapons in their hands, both of these tenacious, loyal men are devoted to their beliefs. Their countries’ circumstances are excruciating, wars have divided the people, even families. Because they have chosen a side, both the sniper and the barber are put in a situation where they have the ability to take away a life, or lives for the greater good of their cause. This tells you a lot about who they are as people. It takes quite the man to take away a life, risking everything to make things right, at least, in their mind. In addition to their similar circumstances, they’re both seeking to alter their country's government’s systems. The sniper wanted Ireland to stay a part of the UK and the barber wanted to prevent a tyranny take over of his country. The sniper’s targets were free staters and the barber’s target was Captain Torres, a leader of the opposition who has taken and …show more content…
Although these men may be living in similar scenarios, the outcome is drastically different. Of course, their biggest difference is the fact that the sniper was willing to kill several people but the barber did not kill a single soul. Not even a drop of blood fell from Torres’ face when the barber was shaving him. This is due to another one of their key differences. The barber is an overthinker. It took the entire time from when Captain Torres sat in that chair to the moment he got up with a freshly shaven face for the barber to understand the consequences and backlash of his actions. On the other hand, the sniper killed without a wince or second thought to his actions. He was quite the quick thinker actually, this was most accurately depicted when the sniper dropped his wounded hand over the ledge to make it seem like he was dead. And finally, the barber is much more fearful than the sniper. The story describes the barber trembling as Torres walks in, sweating, nervous, anxious, you name it, whereas the sniper had no problem shooting several people, including an elderly woman, and unbeknownst to him at the time, his own brother. Another thing worth pointing out is, the sniper lit a cigarette, well aware the light could draw attention, putting himself in a risky position. He took the chance and was shot at, resulting in his arm

Both the sniper and the big brother in both stories, learn a lesson, to me carefully. Not to think of the first option and go with it. You have to think of other ways, in any solution. Both were thinking of themselves. The big brother thought if he had a brother who could walk, he wouldn’t be as embarrassed, then he kept on making goals one after the other, not giving his little brother enough time to catch up with him.…

The Man He Killed deals with the uselessness, or pointlessness, of war. It dramatizes a battle scene between two men. It is told from the point of view of an ordinary working-class soldier, who is reflecting on the idea that the man he killed in battle probably had a lot in common with him. He deals with an internal struggle as his thoughts are regretful before he even shoots. The narrator ponders that , he would have befriended the combatant.…

Secondly, the barber’s point of view reflects how the barber and Captain Torres are, in a way, each other’s character foils. At that time, people of different professions have different perspectives on how to attain honour. In the barber’s eyes, murdering him would defy the way he sees himself and his job. He “prides himself on never allowing this to happen to a client”, referring to accidentally opening up a single customer’s pore. It can be seen that the “conscientious” barber treats his customers equally, and as equals, despite their atrocious backgrounds.…

“The Sniper” by Liam O’flaherty and “Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez really digs deep and somehow manages to play with emotions. Giving away that both stories circulates around the topic of war, O’flaherty and Tellez still portrayed the meaning of the stories in two completely different styles. Though both stories took place during a war, “the Sniper” happened in the battlefield on a rooftop at night while “LANE” happened in a barber shop in the afternoon away from an actual battlefield. As readers, we can easily assume that majority of wars happen in the form of an external or a person vs person conflict with both sides somehow relying on something usually for safety purposes. The two stories did successfully present these points…

Great comment Mr. Tsui! My interpretation reading the story is that since Torres knew that there was a chance the barber could murder, there is no way that Torres came in defenseless. Torres was ready to fight the barber, and to his surprise after many assassination attempts, the barber didn’t kill him. The barber had such a golden opportunity but didn’t take it, thus Torres figured that the barber wouldn’t take any opportunities to kill him. Since it was revealed in the end that Torres doesn’t enjoy ending lives, I interpreted the story that the barber will be left off as Torres wouldn’t want to kill someone who wouldn’t kill him.…

When the barber recognizes him and trembles, when the captain announces “not one will live,” describing the four rebels hanging naked, dead, when he sees the veins popping out of the skin, “waiting to be slit,” when he turns around to say something to the barber, there’s numerous uses of suspense. In the end of the story, when the captain turns around to say something to the barber, you get mixed emotions, and ask yourself about the feelings he was having. “They told me that you’d kill me. I came to find out. But killing isn’t easy.…

In a way yes, the revolutionaries would win but only for a matter of time. The government would get another captain soon after and the barber would be executed before long. This proves that he chose the right path in that everyone else’s life would’ve continued on basically the same either way, except he would much rather keep his own life the same. The barber wanted to keep a clean conscience. As stated at the end of the story, Captain Torres knows when he walks into the barber shop that he is about to face his foe and also that his foe knows about him, yet he still takes a chance and walks in…

The Barber from the short story “Lather and Nothing else” by Hernando Tellez reveals the theme people do not always speak what is on their mind by considering to murder Captain Torres, hiding his fear of Captain Torres and assuming Captain Torres is unaware he is a revolutionary. To begin with, the Barber considers murdering Captain Torres. For instance, the Barber says “But I don’t want to be a murderer” (Torres 4). When the Barber says this (to himself) he is struggling to decide whether he should kill Captain Torres or not, even though the Barber works an average job, he supports the revolutionaries and Captain Torres is against them, so he is stuck to decide (by himself) whether he should help the revolutionaries he supports or do his job;…
