My So-Called Enemy Summary

In today’s society, we live in a world of cultural differences. In the newspaper editorial “American Flag stands for Tolerance” by Ronald J. Allen, it talks about people from different backgrounds and whether they support the burning of the flag or are against it. In the story “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?” by Etgar Keret, it talks about how one boy reacts around someone who comes from a different culture as he does. In the video My So-Called Enemy by Lisa Gossels, it shows how different cultures interact with each other. All three of these pieces display actions that show as people, we do not always accept others that come from a different cultural background as we do. Hanin says “ I am sorry for what happened. I know that you will not accept what I say. But I can’t understand to come from Europe and to kick people from their houses. I think there are a lot of empathetic places in the world. You could live there” (Gossels). Hanin does not like the fact that Jewish people are living in her homeland. She feels as if they are invading her space and she does not want that. Hanin does not want to accept the other girls, because they are Jews and they are not like her. Throughout the video the girls are around each other and at the end of the video they learn where one another is coming from. A Palestinian girl Inas says “ I love them and all of them are my friends. We talk everyday and read together. We dance together and we see the movies together. But when I remember that they are Jewish I have my feelings at the same time” (Gossels). The girls started to accept on another despite their cultural backgrounds. They started to respect the others for who they were as a person. They learned to be more accepting and to not judge a book by its
