These events are what is able to make Sarah more empathetic by being able to care more for herself and others. Although Sarah is looked at as a hero on the outside for cutting off her finger, there are also many downfalls that these events have created in her life that affect her as a person but also allow her to reevaluate her life and become a stronger person. One of the biggest events that make Sarah a more caring person is Andrew's death. Sarah's perspective shows the effect her decisions had on her family that lead to Andrew's death and how she is able to find her inner self in order to get through these downfalls. Sarah explains to Little Bee how she, "I Didn't lose Andrew, Bee. I destroyed him I cheated on him with another man" ( Pg. 139). Sarah is able to show that she did feel guilty for cheating and saw how it destroyed Andrew and herself leading to his suicide. Although at the time Sarah didn't see the signs of Andrews depression," I never understood that he was actually going to do it. Little Bee however also shows the stronger side of herself and the emotions she has faced throughout the struggles.Little Bee’s perspective shows the struggles of being an immigrant in England and how that has affected her mindset towards herself before going to Sarah. Little Bee is able to change emotionally after staying with Sarah and begins to find her inner self. From Little Bee's perspective it is shown that after she witnessed her sister's death and being in an immigration center Little Bee became overcome with suicidal thoughts “ In the immigration center, they told us we must be disciplined to overcome our fears.
