Ever since I was young, I was incredibly accident-prone. One time I even ran into a door frame and cracked my skull open. Thousands of stitches (and years) later, here I am, surprisingly still in one piece. This brings me to the thing I value more than anything: the people who end up having to take care of the dumbass who gets in those situations. First there is my twin sister, or as many immediately assume, the facsimile of me, right? Actually, Alyse and I are significant different, from our core values to our interpersonal relationships, but somehow we are also closer than any two best friends. My parents, on the other hand, react to those incidents a little differently. In fact, my writing is usually inspired by my family dynamic, which

In the film My Cousin Vinny, intercultural communication is exemplified throughout. The film presents characters from New York who find themselves in the southern state of Alabama, where they display differences within their cultural values, norms, and communication patterns including certain verbal and nonverbal codes. Therefore, these intercultural communication components come to reveal the way the two different cultures represented in the film by the different characters view themselves and each other. My Cousin Vinny presents the cultural values of southern culture through the character of the trial judge, Chamberlain Haller juxtaposed to Vinny's northern (New York) values.…

Unlikely duos are a common find in fictional media. While it can’t be said that George Milton and Lennie Small, from John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, were the first, it can be assumed that the conflicts faced between them inspired many modern works. Steinbeck portrays George and Lennie as having a sibling-like relationship. Through this, George realizes that Lennie’s existence is holding him back, and only putting Lennie even further in harm’s way. This leads us to the theme that sometimes, in order to protect the ones you love, you have to do things that will harm them.…

Life is full of people that help shape and mold you into the person you become. Maybe it's a parent, grandparent, teacher, or maybe even a friend. For me at least, it's my older sister, Amber Oertel. Amber has been with me as long as I can remember, granted she would have rather had mom and dad bring home a puppy instead of me, I still like to think she still likes me. She has been with me through some of the greatest losses in both of our lives, she has also been the source of some of my greatest adventures, but most of all, she has been an important role model in my life.…

The ride home from the mall with my Great Uncle Stan and all my brothers and sisters was agonizing. My younger brother Quinton would not stop crying that we had gone the wrong way back home. On the other hand, Donnajo was attempting to sit in Uncle Stan’s lap while he was in the middle of driving, which more than likely caused the events that happened later on that night. Now even though it sounds really inappropriate for their age, all three of my recently nine-year-old siblings were in the front seat. We were in what used to be Stan’s truck, meaning there were only three seats in the front.…

My autobiography could easily turn into the most banal, quintessential story of the “small town, big dreams” variety— so I try to steer clear of that, but I will make no such promises. Though, small town summarizes Crossville pretty well, or it did at some point. It has since sprung up to quite a busy place, at least for Tennessee, but the Crossville I grew up in was like the typical small town from some sort of movie from the eighties. It was all gossip about who was marrying who and who had stopped going to church and who had started going to church and who had gotten who pregnant— not to mention that everyone knew everyone. My parents, Abby and Patrick, had been married for several years and had already had my sister, Morgan, when I came along.…

My Rite of Passage A multitude of cultures have ceremonies designated to propel an individual from adolescence to adulthood. Whether it be the Hispanic Quinceanera or the Jewish Bat Mitzvah, there are ways to formally give insight to individuals about the many intricacies of adulthood. Although these formal celebrations are joyous occasions, we then wonder about the informal occasions that bring us into maturity. Throughout my life, I, as well as my family, experienced an emotional pain we never felt before.…

During my freshman year of high school, I discovered a personal truth, that I have no limitations other than those I choose to place upon myself. As the oldest child I have often faced many challenges and obstacles, but my family's support and my determination to succeed has kept me persistent. Three years ago, my mother had surgery and spent over two weeks at the hospital while my brothers and I remained at home. My mother's absence was a tormenting experience in which made me more conscious of the responsibilities I had as the oldest sibling. To be part of a particular group, one must be credible, possess factual knowledge, and draw on the values of its member to be accepted into the group. I am sure everyone has his or her own group of friends; a group that shares the same common interest or communicates, and behaves the same way. A discourse community is a group of people who share a set of discourses, a particular interest, understand the basic values and assumptions, and the ways of communicating about those goals in their community. People who used specialist languages within their area of expertise include teachers, doctors, and scientists, and students who are involved in multiple groups of organization in school are some examples of discourse communities.
