Cultural Dance Video Analysis

The cultural dance video from this week's assignment that drew my interest the most was the commercialized hula performance. This video stood out the most to me because I have never actually sat and watched hula dancing before so when I opened this video it immediately had me sucked in. The very beginning sequence before any dancing started when the girl placed the lai over the camera was so interesting and captivating. Also, the bright colors and fast paced hip movements were also factors that made the hula video the most interesting to me. There were also times especially about a minute in where the dancers slow down their movements and did simple arm movements that stood out to me because even though they were not doing anything extravagant

Loud beats, shouts and footsteps fill my ears, and an awful stench of sweat makes it’s way into my nose, but this dance studio is a special place nonetheless. It may seem hectic and rowdy to some people, but not to me. An environment I entered so cautiously at first started to become natural and safe. I had never thought I would spend so much time in this place doing something I loved. I would not forget how the first day went.…

Scholars have identified the works of several artists who showed a blend of both the Native American culture and that of Euro-American cultures in their paintings and drawings. For example, in the Shawnee War Dance by Ernest Spybuck 1833-1949, Spybuck shows the dance being performed for an Indian and a non-Indian audience. Spybuck has also embraced a Euro-American style of painting (Judith, 2008). The defined figures and flattened pictorial spaces of the earlier ledger drawings are no longer used as are swapped by sculptural figures and an illusionistic rendering of space similar to the work of 19th century artists such as George Catlin who frequently painted Native Americans. For Native Americans, narrative genre paintings were insignificant way of self-definition.…

In the first video, I believe the music is diffusing to folk culture. The artist of the video still uses key aspects of Appalachian music, such as the banjo and the guitar, but the lyrics and the sound of the instruments were much quieter than traditional Appalachian music. In addition, there is also a slight aspect of diffusing into popular culture since the video is more like a music video than the others and contains more lyrics. For the second video, there is no diffusion at all since that is what most people including myself, consider traditional Appalachian music. The harsh sound of the instruments is one of key signs of traditional Appalachian music.…

The intense lights, colorful costumes, and ribboned pointe shoes decorated the stage. As the lively music played for those dancing in the spotlight, I waited in the wings, nerves jumping in my stomach. Every little movement would be seen from the peering eyes of the audience. Preparation for this role was packed into a few weeks, and both the honor of earning this part and the pressure of performing well accumulated on my shoulders. Originally, I had an ensemble part with the rest of my dance class, only understudying for role of Autumn, one of the four soloist positions offered in Milwaukee Ballet School’s Spring Showcase, Snow White.…

Many people use drugs just for the effects, others however, will take a drug to try and increase performance, apart of a cultural ritual, or because of those around them using. Many college students will start taking Adderall or Ritalin to try and increase performance or to stay awake long enough to finish all of their work. Many Native American tribes used drugs like alcohol and tobacco as apart of rituals. You then have people who are apart of a great ecosystem of drug user, dealer, and seller who may get wrapped into drugs because they are apart of that group.
